It's not that the Kree are not emotional it's that they are good at compartmentalizing.
Also, it bothers me when people say Yon-Rogg was keeping the truth from her ~for selfish reasons~, considering how much guilt he always carries with him, including for things that aren't his fault, it would be so much easier to unload it all on her so he doesn't have to feel guilty about lying to the person he cares about the most, but that would put her in immediate danger.
In this case choosing to tell the truth despite consequences would be the selfish choice, not to mention reckless as it would put them both on SI's bad side and, as far as Yon knows, it's a sure death sentence, or something worse. (to people who say 'he should have told her the truth' i want to ask 'and then what? Die together?')
Of course he would make the only responsible choice under the circumstances and try to uphold the lies SI told Vers and try to shelter her from SI's wrath in any way he can. Honesty and ~living his truth~ is not a luxury he can afford. And he will just have to shoulder the extra responsibility and guilt the way he always does because his life is the definition of 'being stuck between a rock and a hard place'. :(
SI: Your stress levels have been off-the-charts in the past 6 years, are you sure Vers is up for this mission?
Yon-Rogg: *who is worried about Vers 24/7* I don't know what you mean, she's 100% ready and my eye is not twitching.
'you were blinded by your feelings for her'
I know I probably talked about it a dozen times but I will just never get over how Yon-Rogg LIED TO RONAN THE ACCUSER to buy more time to recover Vers, because it's one big moment that shows, UNMISTAKABLY, that he cared more about getting Vers back safely than eradicating the Skrull threat.
He was risking so much, he was sticking his neck out instead of doing the wise thing and covering his bases.
And that moment ultimately cemented his failure.
Because if he had let the Accusers just bomb the shit out of that part of the world, the Skrull threat would be contained, and sure, Vers would be lost forever, but that's acceptable loss for the Kree Empire.
BUT it wasn't acceptable loss for Yon-Rogg.
His love was always going to be his downfall.
Some of us have been saying from the start that Yon teaching Vers about control is basically passing down something that was painstakingly drilled into him, rather than just some sinister manipulation technique, and after seeing The SI mock him for 'losing control' it honestly couldn't be more clear. If that's how he gets treated for showing emotion, no wonder he's terrified of it and tries to contain it, and yet it still seeps through.
Yon-Rogg be like 'Step one: show no affection or approval'
Carol *is being Carol*
Yon-Rogg 'Failed step one'.
Do you ever think about how Vers/Carol must have been jealous/insecure about Yon's relationship with the SI in more than one aspect.
On one hand, she could see/hear in the way he spoke about it, how unwaveringly devoted he was. And she knew she should feel the same way, that's what they are supposed to be like, the Kree, but she didn't feel that same level of devotion/exaltation communing with the SI, she felt that something missing, the sense of belonging.
On the other hand, while she knew Yon was a dedicated friend and mentor, she always felt like she was going to come second to the SI and the Empire, and she couldn't help but wish to be his number one. (without knowing she kinda was already and how much he risked to even keep her alive)
So in the end, of course, finding out that he's been lying to her under the orders of the SI, felt like being slapped in the face, that the SI won and he was never going to choose her, she felt betrayed and in a perverse sense almost like she's been cheated on, so even though there were other pressing things and other Kree to worry about, she still insisted on pursuing him after he escaped Mar-vell's ship and then incapacitated his pod so he'd wait for her to 'settle the score' after she's done with Ronan.
The grim irony here is that he did end up choosing her over the SI and the Kree Empire, when he decided not to try to bring her in anymore after she didn't have the core, and by turning off his weapons/giving up in the end and likely signing his own death sentence, but she doesn't realise the implications or that she's sending him back to fate worse than death. (Marvel pls fix this ;_;)
SI: you worthless piece of shit
Yon-Rogg: can't argue with that
Anyone literally: Vers isn't 100% perfect
Yon-Rogg: HOW DARE YOU
Yon-Rogg as he watches Carol free herself from the mind tentacles of the Superior Intelligence:
