Superman Returns: Fortress of Solitude (GBA)
Superman probably has the worst track record of any superhero in existence when it comes to video games. Yet somehow, hope springs eternal among each team who takes up the challenge of translating his awesome abilities. And why not? As I've said before, they're not ALL bad.
When EA picked up the license for Superman Returns in 2006, I'm sure they had no idea just how terrible the game they'd produce would become. Of course, that was the PS2/Xbox/360 version. They also made versions for the DS and GBA. Whereas the DS managed to suck even harder than the console editions — a spectacular feat, to be sure — the GBA version is easily the best of the lot. It's actually a pretty good game. Too bad it's a puzzle game. Whaaaaaaaa.... ? Whose idea was it to make a Superman-themed PUZZLE game? This is not what people want or expect from the license. Maybe the development team looked at previous Superman stinkers, saw the writing on the wall, and decided to take their version in a wholly different direction in order to avoid those same pitfalls. Whatever the reason, the marketing team made matters worse when they designed the game's box... but we'll get to that. So the entire Game Boy Advance game, titled "Superman Returns: Fortress of Solitude," is themed around the idea that Superman is training with his father Jor-El in the Fortress of Solitude, and the puzzles are mental challenges that Virtual Jor-El is placing before Supes during his training. I guess that's a clever gimmick. Much like the movie it's theoretically based upon, this Superman Returns game is also centered around crystals. There are two main games: Kryptonex and Crystallization. Kryptonex is basically just Sudoku, except using a variety of differently colored/shaped crystals instead of numbers. Thanks to certain features I'll explain two paragraphs from now, it also moves at a faster pace than Sudoku. And like Sudoku, it's a solidly diverting brainteaser.
Kryptonex is basically high-speed Sudoku with built-in cheats. That's not necessarily a bad thing.
Crystallization is the main attraction here, though. This unusual puzzler asks you to complete whole rows or columns of crystals in order to "crystallize" the surface beneath (which basically just turns it from dark blue to light blue, and makes the crystals you used disappear from the board). How do you complete rows? You get a selection of three crystals at a time, and you place one crystal on the board at a time. Every crystal you place must share either its color or its shape with every crystal it touches. This starts off simple enough, but as the board gets more crowded, becomes increasingly harder and more compelling. It's rather shockingly addictive. I mean, I've had DREAMS about this game.
Crystallization is awesome, especially when the boards get bigger and more complex.
Both of the puzzles are fun, and as an added benefit, you get Superman's powers at your disposal. In Kryptonex, you can use x-ray vision to see the outline of what shapes go where for a few seconds, which makes the game move MUCH faster than regular Sudoku - you'll probably complete each board in a matter of 2 or 3 minutes. You can also use superspeed to stop the timer for a bit (each chapter has a time limit that Jor-El sets for you, so this can save your bacon on occasion). In Crystallization, you can use heatvision to melt the set of three crystals you have, at which point you are given a new handful of crystals to use. You can also use superspeed the same way as in the other game, or you can use freeze breath to crystallize one square and its adjoining squares on the board - an incredibly useful tool if you get stuck in a corner. Supes' power meter refills over time, so you can never run out of any ability permanently, and as you complete rows and columns in each game, you'll find the meter filling up faster and faster. In each chapter, you'll also get the opportunity to participate in one "epic battle." Don't let the name of this segment fool you - it's really more of a fun break from the real action. Epic battles are side-scrolling shoot-'em-up stages where you must use your heatvision and freeze breath to take down enemies and collect "power gems" on your way to some supervillian. These stages are really simple to play and only last about a minute each, but they're actually a fun chance to truly experience the raw power of being Superman. The controls are tight, and it's nice how each enemy can only be taken out using one power or the other. Sadly, when you reach the supervillian - such as Brainiac, Parasite, Metallo and other baddies we wish were in the shitty Returns movie - the final confrontation takes place in a series of comic-panel cut scenes. To make matters worse, there are only 5 epic battles in the game, even though the game has 20 chapters of puzzles! That's right, you'll replay the same battles FOUR TIMES EACH. You can tell this wasn't the focus of the game, and it's one heck of a missed opportunity.
Epic battles cover a variety of environments, bring the fun and are WAY too damn short.
Remember when I mentioned how the marketing team fucked this game up? Yeah, the box really focuses on the "epic battle" segments. In each chapter, you'll spend about 20-30 minutes doing puzzles (don't worry, the game saves automatically after each one) and ONE minute doing the epic battle in the middle, yet the box designers seem to think this shooter stage is the majority of the game. Way to mislead your audience! But I can understand why you guys were so embarassed about advertising the REAL game in here. I mean, you made a freakin' SUPERMAN PUZZLE GAME. And even though it's a really GOOD puzzle game, it's still a bizarre damn decision. What were you guys thinking? Why NOT just make a shooter game using Superman's powers to soar through the sky? I'm torn between praising the game for being one of the very few Superman titles that's well-made and worth playing overall ... or trashing it for missing the entire point of the license. In the end, if you're a Superman fan looking for the chance to really take control of your hero, don't bother with this 'cause you are NOT going to be satisfied with those skimpy shooter levels. If you're a puzzle game fan? Give it a try; you just might like this. The puzzles are addictive and challenging without being frustrating, and you get to listen to a well-done orchestral score that ups the tension while you solve them. And if you love Superman AND puzzle games, and you would love to see a combination of the two? EA has cooked up a soup just for you, you beautiful weirdo. I just wish I could understand why.
