Hello darlings!

We are back again with a read of the week. This past week, we had our raffle winner pick the theme for our nominations and they picked 'Supernatural Ryan' and we got a stellar list of nominations to pick from.

This week's selection was a tough vote, but we came together in the end to pick something with a lot of heart, pair of sharp teeth and the kind of intimacy that makes the whole book club keel over in a heap.

Summary: Ryan is a vampire in a world where vampires are not that extraordinary anymore, really. Still, he thinks he might be getting the short end of the stick when he realizes everyone is having amazing vampire sex, including plain ol' human Shane. So Ryan is intrigued. (Sue him, ok?)

Book Club Thoughts:

this fic ultimately was a good mix of cute and spicy

my fave part of this fic is the persistent metaphor and through line of like. heart beat? blood flow? it's not said In Those Words necessarily every single time, but the wordless communication it takes within this supernatural world in order to be compatible.

i do love when they do get together though, shane's explanation of how personal the combination of blood drawing and sex is for him. deeply romantic, i thought. and just the overall encouragement shane gives ryan so ryan can just relax and give into it

I also like the fact that Ryan feels a bit disconnected from his vampirism - like he finds ways to get by and doesn't want to see himself as some other - also a good commentary on living in a multicultural society. Kinda how he mentions he feels disconnected from his culture bc he doesn't speak spanish

I really enjoyed Ryan's internal conflict about his desires, wanting them, but also feeling shame. I liked the way you drew out the path through his thought processes.

I think like, vampirism and kink are always so closely entwined in so many fics and takes on it and I like that it's very clear that it works for Ryan and Shane because they did the bit where they talked about what they were expecting out of the scene

sometimes vampire sex is about the hunger to be yourself and the other other person fully embracing it and not turning away

Also the vampire sex was really hot

Something so affirming about Shane loving and missing Ryan’s fangs

The juxtapositions between the first and last scenes. Ryan’s growth and acceptance of himself is so palpable

the thing about supernatural Ryan is, in addition to everything said in this discussion, it just feels to me like an extension of his unwavering belief in something more in the world.

Hi Nini! I'm looking for a fic where Ryan dies and Shane continues Unsolved alone. I remember it said that "the new Unsolved had a darker tone" or something as Shane continues to search for Ryan's ghost, but Ryan never materialized. I've been through all the "major character death" you've tagged, as well as all the "ghost Ryan." It would have been posted before fall 2018. If you can't find it, it's ok! Thanks for your help!

Commentary: Ah, that beautiful MCD that makes you wish you were the one dead. This fic destroyed me since the first time I read it and it’s also my favorite ghost story in the fandom. Like– we got some really good stuff with the AU, but this one is– like, kind of, the most… “realistic” and human I’ve read so far. The important word here being human. It’s really something else.

It gives you a grief that resonates with you, your soul, it breaks your heart and makes you cry. It takes you from the extraordinary beginning to the human ending, and it makes you believe at the end. It’s wonderful, one of the best fics I’ve read.

Hallow shippers & readers!

We're still going strong on week#2 of spooky month. This month, the book club got to votin' and picked three spooky fics to read together for three weeks remaining in October. Our second choice in the tally was This year’s love (had better last) by Agf, a tale delving into modern magic, a curse that resonates with the year it was written for and a lovely surprise at the end. The book club agreed that this fic was sweet and subtle in its execution of the metaphorical human experience of isolation in a crowd.

Summary:

Shane’s given up on breaking his curse. After all, it’s not very likely he’ll bump into someone able to break it on Halloween - the one day he’s really visible - is it?

Book Club Thoughts:

As a lonely person this fic hit me right in the feels. Also I love the way he goes to a haunted house to be seen and noticed when we know that he'd not even flinch at people trying to scare him irl. I think that's a nice way to do it The POETRY of having gone through life like a ghost to finally be seen by the biggest believer in ghosts... It's so very Shane to not fight against the hand that the world dealt him and so very Ryan to be the one to show him he can i love the curse itself. "unremarkable". it's such an understated word and filled with such spite... she needed him to be unremarkable, so she said he was and then he was. but i think it can mean something so internal about shane, as well. that feeling of unremarkability. this fic is just so interesting to me This fic really gets the feeling of being lonely and then being seen. Finding a connection you never thought you could have. i also just wanted to mention the ending where ryan takes candid pics of shane and sends them to him. both because ugh dont we all want a love like that!!! ... even when youre not doing anything particularly interesting or when youre not posing and camera ready. i still see you and love you and want to keep these reminders that youre here with me I think it's such an interesting metaphor for a feeling that is so deeply human. whether logical or not i think everyone has times where they feel invisible and alone, like that alienation of being surrounded by loved ones and not being able to connect and feeling like they can't really see you, and all you want is to find someone who can see the real you there’s just something really poetic about this fic, the loneliness and how isolation can feel like a curse, how sometimes it feels like we’re waiting for that special person to break our curse. and I saw someone mention already the year it was written, which is a really crucial detail I think - irl Shane seemed to be suffering from isolation, being far from a lot of people he knows, so I can see how this fic would resonate with folks at the time especially

The book club is structured so that we solicit nominations from our members, either based on a theme or a trope or simply a request for their favorites, and develop a list of ten nominations, which are then narrowed down to a top three. The top three fics end up in our weekend vote and the winner of that vote becomes our book club fic for that week.

This week we had our raffle winner choose our theme and they chose any fic with supernatural Ryan, and while the list was a little smaller this time round, we got excited and quite a few bangers hit our nominations channel in swift succession. Shane looks up and nearly swallows his tongue as he finds himself face-to-face with Ryan from LycanSubscribe. The YouTube channel that’s consumed most of Shane’s leisure time and pretty much all his waking thoughts for the past two weeks, not to mention a couple of vaguely guilty jerk-off sessions. Ryan’s wearing a white T-shirt with a pair of sunglasses hooked onto the neck and there’s a stray lock of hair curling over his forehead, and he’s even more startlingly attractive in the flesh—which in Shane’s opinion is saying something. He says, “Hi, can I get a—” “Grande iced chai latte,” Shane blurts out, before he can stop himself.

Hi! I while back I read a fic where both have reverse powers. Shane's touch is dangerous and Ryan's is for healing. There is a scene where they kiss making the Bigfoot episode and Shane hates his birthday. The title had something to do with a kiss but I don't remember anything else :(

Summary: Everyone is born with Gifts. It doesn’t matter if they didn’t ask for it.

Shane never thought he would meet the only person in the world he can touch without killing them, let alone fall for him.

Commentary: I wrote this fic, so here’s a comment by @mercury-skies: “Kismet is a story that beautifully reimagines a much beloved trope with creative flair and a loving and delicate touch. There are so many small elements in this fic that come together to project such a distinct air of tenderness that repeatedly stole my breath. Sex scenes that invoke such gentle passion and smoulder with care and intimacy it almost aches to read them.  The boys so obviously care for each other and getting to see how their love develops alongside their attitudes toward their gifts is a treat. Smatterings of banter lighten the emotional burden and keep a most ardent and desperate love so very Shyan. A must read for hopeless romantics, and the hopeful ones too.”

Commentary: A nice look at a world where vampires are known and legal, in which Ryan who has lived for a long time as one, is curious about his own persona and identity, and his sexuality. 

It gives you a such a trip, because it’s a world that is just plain fun for you to read and see Ryan go through this journey. Seeing Shane letting him discover himself and just be there for the ride, the way he helps Ryan, it’s really good.

This is an excellent work and I really want to recommend it to everyone.

Summary: Ryan knew the moment that they set foot in the old building that this was going to be another long night. Not because of his Gift, but because the old mansion looked like a palace, the exact kind of place where Ryan imagined old-timey ghosts to live.

Also known as the story where Ryan sees the future and hates it - and Shane is being his most supportive self.

Commentary: An interesting world where some people are born gifted, it builds an Alternate Universe in which having a little magic, some fantastic power, can go very right or maybe not so much. 

The story makes this world complete, Ryan and Shane’s relationship feeds it so well, it’s really good to read.

Commentary: Really a sweet story with one of the best endings I’ve read in a while. I genuinely enjoyed this, its characterization and ending.
