minnesota is under federal occupation by ICE. here are ways you can help, whether you are in MN or not. ↓
Donate
tip 💡 make a plan for your donations. set a time and feasible budget, and save places to donate to ahead of time!
directory to find where to donate:
➡️ stand with minnesota
other helpful links: msp magazine | mpls mutual aid | neighborhood house | list of MN businesses who supported the general strike
for those in MN, there are many local fundraisers taking in cash, clothes, diapers, gift cards, books, groceries, and more!
some places:
haven watch is accepting donations for gas cards and prepaid phones to get people home after they are released from the federal whipple building.
several independent bookstores amplify and set up fundraisers and book drives. here is a list to some of their socials.
easy day cafe is holding a food drive and looking for volunteers to help pack!
the hamline midway coalition is accepting donations for diapers, formulas, hygiene and medical supplies.
the nonprofit hunger-relief organizations of MN released a statement with a list of food shelves & groups calling for ICE out of MN. find places to support!
but what else can i do besides donate? here are some ideas to get you started. ↓
Organize
you've likely heard calls to organize/mobilize, but what does that mean?
simply put, organizing is planning to put an idea in action. mobilizing is bringing people together to complete that action.
so what does that look like?
attend legal observer/ICE watch trainings
join a rapid response line
↪️ keep an eye out for local immigration orgs who often provide these trainings and get you connected to rapid response lines! the indivisible team is a good starting point.
connect with your coworkers/union
participate in local & national strikes
boycott the companies helping ICE
tip 💡 can't boycott completely yet? start by easing off some services. lessen your spending while you gather alternatives, then make the switch. give yourself grace, but don't become complacent!
report ICE sightings to your community, either directly or through sites like iceout
communicate with your neighbors! make plans in case your neighborhood is affected (encrypted chat/mutual aid/know who to call, etc.)
↪️ join already existing networks! this might take asking around some trusted people.
research effective protest methods
know your rights/research your local laws
find & follow local orgs (and indie stores!) for the causes you care about
call (and pressure) your representatives!
↪️ knowledge is a powerful tool, and there are so many ways to learn! once you learn, you can 1) put your knowledge into action, 2) educate and spread info, or 3) help preserve the knowledge (censorship is a big issue).
Amplify
get the word out! not only to uplift marginalized voices and spread awareness, but also to motivate and keep morale high.
if you're a creative, these might especially interest you...
create posters/signs/art/chants for protests and public spaces to use
sell art to gather funds for donations. examples: stickers, apparel, postcards, buttons, tattoos, commissions, etc.
make zines/pamphlets/cards to distribute locally/online
write inclusive or uplifting messages on your sidewalk
hold workshops to create for the cause, share info, and foster community.
here are some neat insights from guantesolo's what can artists do? what are we doing? event
book clubs are great places for discussion/critique/learning
write !! draw !! sculpt !! weave !! sing !! dance !! share the stories you're seeing and experiencing in any way you can
↪️ and ofc, continue talking in your circles and sharing/reposting in online spaces!
this is a non-exhaustive list, as there are a myriad of ways to support! this goes not only for minnesota, but for all areas affected.
as always, further resources and ideas are welcome! i wish you all the best 🦋
