Another half-formed Alan Wake 2 thought.

So, in Alan Wake 2—spoilers ahead—

You’ve got Alan, Scratch, and Zane.

Alan the Player

Scratch the Enemy

And Zane… the Director.

I think another cute thing being done here is that we are getting to experience a game through all three perspectives at once… or at least switching quite a bit through the story.

We play as Alan. We are the “I” of Alan Wake. I fought the dark presence, and I made it out of the lake.

We fight Scratch (who shares Alan’s face for a chunk of the story). We fight them, that external force of evil. They were the challenge to overcome.

We are subsumed and watched by Zane (again, wearing Alan’s face). Go to the options menu. Under graphical options, you can turn off film grain. Did you even notice it was there? This entire thing was a film. Zane used Alan. He used YOU to tell his story… to escape the spiral. Or… you do? Did I? Did they?

As I said, half-formed thoughts. Enjoy.

so this is a band called hide & seek that i grew up with. in my hometown we had lots of local music shows in a barn on the outskirts of town, and these guys played a whole bunch of these shows. this song in particular, "suit up for love", was always one of my favorites and i remember learning the keyboard part very soon after i actually got my first keyboard. a decade or so later, looking back on it, everything about this makes a weird amount of sense. hide & seek kinda set the standard for a lot of the weird, abrasive, impenetrable music i'd get really into that wasn't appealing to any of my friends, and that trend continues to this day. finding these videos is kinda surreal, as is hearing these tracks again for the first time in years, but i still love these songs and certain moments ("YOU CAN'T PLAY BASKETBALL IN THOSE SHOES!") still rattle around my subconscious and pop up as a reference point from time to time.
