So the Doctors went on strike. I saw a great deal of support but also a great deal of negelativity surrounding it too, which is a shame.
I challenge people to live one week of any NHS health professionals life then tell me you’re happy with changes to your hours which mean you see even less of home for less money. More importantly: Money isn’t the ultimate issue, unlike what some people would have you believe, but it is instead patient safety.
I am a Nurse. I see how hard these Doctors work. I work along side these Doctors and share their frustrations: understaffing and lack of funding means we’re stretched to look after our patients but we do our best to try and make sure when you or those you love end up in a hospital, you feel safe and looked after.
These Doctors don’t have just one ward, they have multiple. They work a 7 day week and days that run well into the night. They don’t complain about the work but about how they’d like to be able to do it with better facilities or have more of that mythical concept called “time”.
I am a Nurse. I work 13 hour days where i don’t get to pee or I have to fill out patient paperwork while I eat my lunch or I have to take five minutes when i get home to process my day and everything that happened, only to get up and do it all over again.
I love our health system. I love the fact that I get to help give something back. The Doctors love our health system. They love supporting those in need and so when the time for us to support them came around and I saw so much negativity it made me genuinely sad and somewhat annoyed.
They aren’t demanding more money, they’re demanding safer practice by ensuring Doctors can cope with the hours they work and as both a provider and user of the health service I fully support that.
