Many Americans blame the police for fatally shooting suspects instead of arresting them but I have not seen anyone discussing the fact that this is by training. In the US, target shooting ranges train police officers to go for the heart and torso. Brain science tells us when we form habits, a part of our brain called Basal Ganglia takes over our coordinated movements WITHOUT Much thinking in times of stress or anxiety. So here is a suggestion: Maybe for civilian police force, we should have whole body targets and train for targeting legs. This way, when officers face life or death in that split second of their engagement (action) on the street, their “basal ganglia” moves their targeting hand towards the suspect’s legs, not torso. Just a suggestion to reduce fatalities and all the pain and mayhem that comes after it.
