I know I'm making it my entire personality but if you haven't seen Superman 2025 yet and wasn't sure whether or not to do so this is your sign to PLEASE go see it!!!
Something that's been on my mind of late is Superman and an interesting aspect of his character, specifically legacy. Clark both inherits and embodies a really unusual and fascinating legacy. One, by a sheer random stroke of fate he is blessed with phenomenal godlike power. Two, the beliefs and values of the Kents. Three, the wisdom of a people of a people that would otherwise have been lost.
His birth parents save him by sending him to another world, the legacy of that choice whether on purpose or by luck sends him to a yellow sun which grants him extraordinary power. Comic book science aside, this is a bizarre and interesting inheritance, few people ever inherit power, let alone this amount of power. At the beginning of his life they're a dangerous nuisance but he grows and evolves, Clark comes to appreciate the things his powers allows him to do but not for himself, for others. They allow him to help other people effectively, which leads to my second legacy.
Doing the right thing, because it can and should be done. Faced with an unusual situation the childless couple that is the humble Kents, decide to take it upon themselves to raise and care for Clark and do their utmost to raise him well. What's so cool is they succeed and leave him the lasting legacy of choosing to use the power you have to save people, to help those who need it, and to otherwise improve the world over, simply because you can. You can always choose to do the right thing, and I think that's really neat.
The by far weirdest legacy he inherits, and one of the more interesting, is the technology and wisdom of a dead people. It's not enough that he carries the weight of our world on his shoulders, but also those he came from, between the fortress of solitude and the technological power and tools he acquires on his many adventures, Clark very much embodies and shoulders the legacy of the last Kryptonian.
What is interesting about his character, in general (obviously there are many different characterizations, I'm merely highlighting things I find interesting) is that he really does try to carry these legacies, not only using the power he's been granted by chance but, doing so responsibly. As well as, being the last survivor of a dead world to embody the hopes of his people not just his birth parents. He learns the Kryptonian language, cares for what remains of their animals, using their technology to explore and do research, tends to their still surviving criminals (phantom zone), and otherwise attempts in any way he can to carry on the legacy of his people. He is not just their survivor, he is their last scientist, jailor, caretaker, gardener, explorer and historian.
Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is that Clark is in an unusual situation and he really does try to shoulder a burden that is his largely due to chance. It is among one of the most fascinating legacies for a character to inherit and I think it's really cool to see and explore.
