Crackdown excessive and unnecessary, says Opposition
KUALA LUMPUR, March 14, 2015:
The crackdown on those involved in the #KitaLawan rally is a case of police’s misuse of power, especially as no law was broken during the weekly protests demanding the release of incarcerated Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
PKR Padang Serai Member of Parliament N. Surendran claimed that the arrests of, among others, student activist Adam Adli, DAP Socialists Youth chief Teo Kok Seong, and PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, were unlawful and illegal.
“The Peaceful Assembly Act no longer requires for a notice to be obtained before a peaceful rally can be held. These individuals have done nothing wrong and have breached no laws,” he told The Rakyat Post this evening.
“It is also a clear cut example of an abuse of power as can be seen in the way these individuals were treated.
“When it comes to offences committed by government officials, the police moves slowly as was seen in the case of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
“The police, however, acted differently towards members of the Opposition.
“Nurul Izzah had a team of police storming her house to arrest her despite both parties initially agreeing on a fixed date where she would come in and have her statement recorded. Same goes with Teo today,” said Surendran.
Teo was arrested this morning after he voluntarily went to have his statement recorded at the Dang Wangi police station as requested by the police.
According to Surendran, the crackdown will only damage the country’s image on the international platform and the end result would see foreign investors losing confidence in Malaysia’s stability.
“This will not stop us from exercising our rights as provided in the Federal Constitution. We will continue with the rally until Anwar is released from prison.”
Nik Nazmi, when contacted, said that it was “very unfortunate” that he, including the rest were treated like a “common criminal”, especially with the Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar issuing a warning saying that all those who have participated in the rally would be hunted down.
“The police were very co-operative during the March 7 event as they themselves helped us facilitate the huge crowd of supporters. But after the event, the crackdown intensified.
“Even if they disagree with the rally, they can investigate and question us, but to detain and request for us to be arrested is really excessive,” claimed Nik Nazmi, adding that he himself was remanded for four days for participating in the weekly rally.
Earlier this evening, Adam and Bersih 2.0 secretariat member Mandeep Singh were arrested during the #KitaLawan rally held outside Sogo Shopping Centre here.
Dang Wangi district police chief Assistant Commissioner Zainol Samah confirmed that Adam and Mandeep were taken to Jinjang police lock-up where Teo have also been placed until police complete their investigations.
