Surface Circulation Vocabulary
Ekman Spiral -- each layer is pushed by the layer above it and pushes the one below it
Ekman Layer -- the upper part of the water column that is affected by the wind
Ekman Transport -- each microlayer moves in a different direction -- the Ekman layer moves at 90 degrees from the wind direction
Gyres -- where the wind-driven surface currents combine into huge, circular systems
Upwelling -- the movement of large volumes of bottom water to the surface
Monsoons -- strong winds that blow northward in summer and southward in winter
