In today’s increasingly isolated world, dogs are becoming more than just pets — they’re filling the emotional gaps left by fractured social networks.
A recent study by ethologist Enik Kubinyi reveals that while rising dog ownership coincides with declining birth rates, it doesn’t mean people are choosing pets over children.
Instead, both trends stem from the same cause: widespread social isolation.
Humans, wired for communal living, now find themselves in smaller, disconnected family units. With fewer support systems, many turn to dogs for companionship, emotional bonding, and even surrogate parenting.
However, Kubinyi warns that this trend reflects a deeper issue: a loss of human connection.
Let’s cherish our furry friends but also work to rebuild stronger, family-based support networks and foster meaningful human relationships.
