I can hear celebratory fireworks outside my living room right now, but genocide is nothing to celebrate. The treatment of our indigenous people is a shameful stain upon all of us in this country, and until we’re willing to recognize it and put a stop to it and make reparations for it, we can’t call ourselves a just and civilized and compassionate nation. Change the date, but let’s talk about ending the incarceration of indigenous people, deaths in custody, police brutality, the removal of children, the exclusion of indigenous voices from public life, the fucking NT intervention (my international followers, I encourage you to google that and learn about how disgraceful Australia can be).
