NEW MAP: Australasia 1788: First Fleet (26 Jan 1788) https://buff.ly/2JlaqdG Prior to the American Revolutionary War (1775–83) British convicts had been transported to North America, but the independence of the United States ended this practise. As an alternative, the British government decided to establish a penal colony on the east coast of New Holland (Australia)—claimed for Britain by James Cook in 1770. In 1788 the British landed the First Fleet of 11 ships at Port Jackson (Sydney), founding the Colony of New South Wales. This marked the beginning of the European settlement of Australia, a process which would prove devastating for the continent’s Aboriginal inhabitants. #australasia #history #welovemaps #map #1780s #1788 #aboriginalaustralians #australia #australianhistory #australiaday #frenchhistory #january #january26 #newsouthwales #britishempire #laperouse #firstfleet #colonialism #britishhistory #aboriginal #maps #newholland #newmap #worldhistory #historygeek #historyteacher #historybuff #convicts #portjackson #historynerd (at Sydney Harbour) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvKPadogdPY/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=mre6e1sox24p

North America 179 years ago today: Centralist Mexico (26 Jan 1840) https://buff.ly/2Wk7P63 Mexico was more stable than Central America, but only marginally so. Under the Centralist regime which had held sway since the time of the Texas revolution, the government attempted to consolidate power but faced frequent insurrections. Unrest led to foreign property damage and mounting debt, prompting France to launch the so-called Pastry War in 1838 to force Mexican reparations. Surviving this French intervention did little for the Mexican government, which soon had to deal with separatist revolts in the Rio Grande, Tabasco, and Yucatan. #northamerica #history #welovemaps #map #1840 #1840s #americanhistory #bayislands #centralamerica #cuba #france #guatemala #honduras #january #january26 #losaltos #mexicanhistory #mexico #riogrande #tabasco #republicoftexas #britishempire #maps #todayinhistory #historytoday #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory (at Mexico City, Mexico) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtFqmIyASQQ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1smklfihavhjn
NEW MAP: Australasia 1808: Rum Rebellion (26 Jan 1808) https://buff.ly/2G28Smq In 1806 William Bligh was made Governor of New South Wales. However, Bligh proved no more popular in this role than he had as Captain of the Bounty two decades earlier and in 1808 was deposed by the military after he attempted to crack down on dubious activities in the colony, most notably the rum trade. NSW would remain under military rule until 1810, when Major-General Lachlan Macquarie arrived from Britain to officially replace Bligh as governor. #australasia #history #welovemaps #map #1800s #1808 #australia #australianhistory #dutcheastindies #williambligh #january #january26 #rumrebellion #newsouthwales #newzealandhistory #tasmania #britishempire #maps #napoleonicwars #colonialaustralia #historybuff #newmap #historyteacher #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #pacifichistory #historymaps #historicalatlas #hmsbounty (at Sydney, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtUUiccAvQq/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=blcbcx9j2zxq
