Croatian wedding on an island of Susak, Croatia. Spaarnestad Onderwerpen
Suščani are a small Croatian endogamous community today inhabited only in two locations, namely the island of Susak near Lošinj and about 4,000 mostly in the American city of Hoboken in New Jersey. Suščani speak their own dialect, have their own customs. They represent a small community that only marries each other. The researches of Zlata Dolinar-Osol point to consanguineous marriages and brother-sister marriages, and it can be taken as an example where a female person's great-grandmother on the female line and great-grandfather on the male line were brother and sister. According to research in the field, a large number of consanguineous marriages were established, but morphologically no form of degeneration was proven.
