OK I need your thoughts and analysis! “Here with Me” by Susie Suh as a current situation Ruthari song
*listens*
ohmygosh anon
Firstly, let me say that I am a huge sucker for soft contemplative songs with a heavy heartbeat rhythm. They feel very Moonshadow, like they’re saying two things at once, and so I tend to associate them with Runaan by default.
And this one is beautiful. Tragically so. I think it’s a very good fit for Ruthari as they currently exist.
But if I may make it more angsty, this can be a song about Runaan’s entire relationship with Ethari.
“Here With Me” by Susie Suh x Robot Koch
Caught in the riptideI was searching for the truthThere was a reasonI collided into you
Calling your name in the midnight hourReaching for you from the endless dreamSo many miles between us nowBut you are always here with me
Nobody knows whyNobody knows how andThis feeling begins just like a sparkTossing and turning inside of your heartExploding in the dark
Calling your name in the midnight hourReaching for you from the endless dreamSo many miles between us nowBut you are always here with me
Oh inside meI find my wayBack to youBack to you
Calling your name in the midnight hourReaching for you from the endless dreamSo many miles between us nowBut you are always here with me
Two wordsIn your handsIn your heartsIt’s whole universe
You are always here with me
The first thing that jumps out at me is that the first time the “calling your name in the midnight hour” stanza is sung, it feels like young love, fresh and new, and Runaan carrying Ethari in his heart before he’s even confessed his true feelings. Miles are a metaphor here, but Runaan’s sure of his feels.
The second time, it feels like it takes place during their established relationship, with Runaan taking Ethari’s love with him on his missions. These miles are literal, and the dream is his duty.
The third time… Runaan’s alone in the coin, separated from Ethari by circumstance and his own choices. He’s hoping these miles are only literal, and not metaphorical miles as Ethari separates himself from who Runaan has become. The endless dream is his hellcoin. It’s not a pleasant dream in the slightest, and it makes sense that he’d reach for any pleasant memories to avoid focusing on how much everything hurts and sucks.
On the stanzas about “caught in the riptide” and “nobody knows why”: I also like the idea that Runaan doesn’t fully understand why he fell for Ethari and why he’s so perfect for him. He’s such a control freak that it’s kind of sweet to imagine him being swept off his feet by his own caught feels, and he just sort of surrendered to it with a welp and a shrug. It’s so not Runaan, but then Ethari is his opposite and also very good for him, so I enjoy thinking that some part of Runaan–consciously or not–realized Hey, this elf is special and I need him in my life. Like, badly, like right away, I’m incomplete without him, quick how do I date again?
And the very last line, “You were always here with me”… I feel like it’s there at the last because it’s a final realization on Runaan’s part. He may choose duty over love, but Ethari has been the reason he’s been able to be so dutiful. Ethari supports Runaan’s duty and honor with everything he does, everything he is to and for Runaan. And now that they’re apart…possibly forever… Runaan’s got some time to sit and realize exactly how much of his life is due to Ethari’s influence, to his very presence. His physical gifts of protective weaponry and pretty jewelry and decorative horn cuffs that claim Runaan as his own. His more intangible gifts of support, of understanding, of acceptance. Runaan’s very narrowly focused. Ethari’s been very patient and loving with him for years. Other Moonshadow elves may have been less accepting, or possibly as hard as Runaan is, offering him no softness to come home to.
Runaan may have the Moon rune painted on his chest as a symbol of his dedication to his people and his duty to serve them, but think about it: that rune is literally skin deep. What beats beneath it is flesh and blood. And in their own Moonshadow way, both husbands have acknowledged that it belongs to Ethari.
