S u t h a n u is the daughter of Draupadi and Yudhisthira, emperor and empress of Indraprastha. So much of her life is bound up in matters in which she took no part. While she is still young, her father loses his kingdom in a game of dice. She grows up in the palaces of her uncles and relatives while her parents are exiled to the forest. She loses all six of her brothers in the war that follows; she is the only heir of Yudhisthira to survive, because she is a girl.
