LAKSHMI IN THE MODERN WORLD - Hindu Myhtology Event: Day 1 @hindumythologyevent
Lakshmi is everywhere. She was Adi Lakshmi a long time ago when the stars whispered to her as she emerged from those depths of creation, when she first saw her husband’s smile bright against his storm cloud skin.
She is in the gambling dens and the casinos as Dhana Lakshmi, fickle and flirtatious, whispering in people’s ears, saying Just this once, just one more. She smiles when a man whoops with joy at his winnings. He will lose them all later tonight and be beaten by the thugs who watch them with eagle eyes. She laughs and flits off to attend a childbirth as Santana Lakshmi, cooling the mother’s sweaty brow and as the father frets about the hospital bill and the child, he gets news of his promotion and a healthy, beautiful daughter.
She is Vidya Lakshmi as the college student who teaches her classmates the things they don’t understand and the crone that sits in the corner of the street dispensing advice from between missing teeth. Hardly anyone listens but the ones that do, they go home to harmony and abundance.
She is there when a woman on the bus feels the unmistakable intent of a stranger’s hand on her waist, and she is there as Veera Lakshmi in the woman’s blazing eyes as she roars in his face, crushing his hand in hers and she is there as Vijayalakshmi, brilliant and glorious as he is dragged off the bus.
She is in the office of the CEO of a business, who grins at the screen of his computer when it tells him that he is several lakhs richer this month while one of the workers in his factory sells all her gold ornaments to pay for her sick child’s hospital fees. A few days later, he dies, impaled on a rod in his own factory. It turns out, that in a last-minute change to his will, he has left all his wealth to his employees, but Lakshmi still watches disinterestedly as Yamaraj comes to carry his soul, screaming, to Naraka.
She is there when the farmers starve and the supermarkets fill, and she closes her eyes and she is Gaja Lakshmi as the rain pours from the heavens, wetting the soil and she is Bhudevi, dripping and fertile and when the harvest blooms and washes away their tears, she is there as Dhanya Lakshmi, bountiful as the grain.
Mahalakshmi sits by the village pond. She ignores the people who look at her with greed, at her tumbling, silken hair and slender arms full of golden bangles. She smiles at the ones who pass her by, the students with their books and the beggars who will find their bowls overflowing by the end of the day. Her toes brush against the water plants, the lotus stems bending. She lifts one out, petals dripping and fragrant. When she leaves the pondside, just as the late afternoon light turns from golden to twilight, children will come to splash around before their dinners. One will squeal in delight when they upend one of the lotuses and gold coins spill out from where they are hidden between the petals, a gleaming waterfall of wealth.
U r m i l a is the younger sister of Sita in the Ramayana, and daughter of King Janaka and Queen Sunaina of Mithila. From earliest childhood, the sister who shares no blood with her is her closest companion, and she is overjoyed that they both marry into the royal family of Ayodhya.
Tragedy strikes their world like lightning, when Sita and her husband Rama are exiled, and Urmila’s husband Lakshmana accompanies them. She is left all alone in Ayodhya to tend to her grieving father-in-law King Dasharatha, and even more alone when he dies as well.
Urmila is no less devoted to her older sibling than Lakshmana is, and when the goddess Nidra Devi offers her the choice to take on her husband’s share of sleep, Urmila gladly agrees. Fourteen years of sleep is a small price to pay so that her husband might guard her sister day and night.

For @hindumythologyevent
day 8- Mahabharat
Just some internal musings of an observant resident in the Indraprastha palace:
Yudhishthir: the emperor can be seen in the court most of the day with his ministers, the work demanding a certain amount of haste but surprisingly, he never seems like a hurried person. His manner around his place of work always regal and authoritative. He holds kind eyes for his subjects, but rarely a smile. After the end of the day, he can be found with his brothers, or in the presence of queen Draupadi, indulging in pastimes, the constraints mostly removed from his expression, but some remnants are always present, maybe a habit by this point of time. His brothers still steal an improper chuckle from him occasionally, which he tries to hide immediately.
Bhimsena: is normally present at the side of the king, both his most trusted and his shield. There is no one else, save for their brothers, that both of them will trust more. The newcomers always avoid him at all costs, intimidating as he seems. But later on, flock to him all the same because of his warm and amiable manner, can approach him without any hesitation, his laugh always welcoming. The heir likes to walk by the kitchens in his free time, knows everything and everyone closely, and sometimes learns a new skill or two. The cooks take personal pride in his talents, no matter how little hand they had in it. Observing closely can tell you that a few times the queen is there by the door, smiling fondly.
Draupadi: the queen is the hope of everyone in dire circumstances, for she never never loses her calm in times of adversity. She seems strict in first glance, kind in the third one. While strength-wise, Vrikodara is the one who might provide someone with a sense of security, it is Krishnaa herself to whom anyone in need of protection might go, her shelter providing solace to anyone seeking refuge. The full staff of the palace believes that if there ever befell a calamity, like the unannounced coming of sage Durvasa, only she might be able to handle it capably, much similar to her mother-in-law in that regard. Sahdev was the instigator of spreading this belief. Most of the times, she knows you are observing and she indulges the effort.
Arjun: the title of commander of the army may appear to frighten some, but his name receives only affection from the masses. He attracts love from everywhere, maybe a result of the phenomenon of the world being a reflection of your behavior. As sharp his features are during practice, as soft is his caring smile when with his people. Sometimes, his eyes betray a vacant, faraway look. Only god knows who resides in that mind in those special moments. Clearly attached to his family, the affection in his voice is as clear as day, whenever they are around. The staff always finds him running around to complete his duties by himself, Bhimsena rushing after him, yelling at him to rest and him shouting back promises for next time.
Nakul: a delight, a sight to behold, everywhere he makes his presence. Subjects may fumble in front of him, as his charm can be sharp, but he puts them at ease everytime, without fail. He is gifted in the equine field, so the cavalrymen are especially attached to him, their races with him a frequent affair, no matter how much the prince is chided by his elders. His laugh always bribes him a pardon for the clothes torn in the process, for the stray scratches obtained. Whenever Prince Arjun pushes himself, whether in trainings or other duties, he is consistently present, concealed in the shadows, but making sure someone looked out for the incredible archer, his elder brother.
Sahdev: the most beloved of the family, even the king will not deny him anything, but this person is not one to ask for unreasonables. He is frequently found with his eldest two brothers in the court, learning from them as well as his advice being valuable for the elders, the wisdom beyond his age clearly evident. The staff avoids troubling him because they do not want to appear as clingy, even if they love him so, never wishing to disturb him when he is deep in thoughts. But he is always on close terms with the workers employed in jobs outside the palace grounds, chatting without a care, comparing some data and the news around when Prince Nakul rides by, taking the gales and the parchments with him, leaving him sighing.
