alright cowboys listen up I made a cursory post about this book last night when I was half asleep and in my feelings and completely 100% incoherent but now it’s time to Get It Going for real

SO last night I finished this book I had been reading for about a week called “the last thing you surrender” and it was Amazing, like….I just sat there and looked at the cover for a few minutes after reading it and it’s been like….four or five years since I’ve done that on that scale

like there’s good books and then there’s This Book I sound pretentious rn and I know that but it’s quite literally the only way I know how to convey to you how amazing this was

I wanna say it’s a wwii book and I wanna say it’s a civil rights book and I wanna say it’s a social commentary and I wanna say it’s about personal journeys and finding yourselves and it really is all of those things but it just Feels like so much more u know

for a little summary so you know what it’s about instead of just listening to me Scream lmao:

it’s set during wwii and it follows a black family and a white family and their different relationships with society as well as the war itself and how they have to function differently and how they interact with each /other/

one family doesn’t think they owe anything to the white men and the country that hates them (rightfully so) and the other thinks it’s their duty to protect everything that is so freely given to them bc they don’t know anything else

and then they meet. and then everything changes.

and it would’ve been so Easy to make it into your typical white saviour story, but it isn’t

it’s learning hard truths about yourselves and others and holding yourself and others accountable for all the horrible things you've done and and questioning why things Have to be the way they are and it does not hold Any punches when it comes to telling you how it was

and it has the added bonus of not being written by a white man for once so it actually feels Real, which is just so hard to find in historical fiction from the time period, but it’s also so tender, which isn’t something you would expect from this kind of story at all I've never read a story with so many ugly truths that managed to be so warm at the same time

also it was so well researched!! there was so much care and time devoted to this and you can TELL. with every word and every chapter and every plot point you k n o w exactly how this story was treated when it was being written bc it’s exactly the same way you treat it when you’re reading it

also there was a quote that really stuck with me near the beginning and I’ll put that here: “It was as if in his terrible repose, the dead man whispered a reminder of the unutterable truth beneath the soft facade of skin–that for all his pride and pretensions, a man was ultimately just another animal with teeth.”

anyways this is all to say please read this book thanks for coming to my ted talk

2. Is your room messy or clean? So fucking messy. It’s not terrible but only bc my roommate is clean so only my side is a mess but I’m such a messy person.

24. How much money do you have in your wallet at this moment? Fuck if I know and I don’t feel like checking. Probably around $20.

25. What color socks are you wearing? Grey-blue. But I’ve been thinking of putting on my fuzzy captain America socks cause it’s cold and they’re red white and blue.

26. How many pillows do you sleep with? As many as physically possible. I like sleeping on top of a mound of pillows. Currently I have 4 on my bed and my giant panda stuffed animal body pillow.

27. Do you have a job? Nope. I’m a senior in college who doesn’t have work study since my school sucks sometimes. When do I have time for a job. I barely have time to look and I really need to figure out graduation.

28. How many friends do you have? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ idk. Enough. I’ve got a good number of them both at school and at home. If you think we’re friends then we probably are. Like I can count my best best friends if I have to but that seems mean and I don’t want to count the number of friends in general cause that seems arbitrary and mean.

29. What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done? Idk. Like I’ve done not great stuff but nothing is standing out as the worst thing ever.

32. 3 favorite girls namesFuck i dunno. My latest OC is named Ally. Her gf is Jess. My other female OCs are Angela, Theresa, and Elle. Would I name my kid any of those names. Hell no. The terrible things I inflict on OCs are to be kept far away from any potential children I have. Are they favorites. Idk. But they’re the only things coming to mind.

42. Do you take any medications daily? Sometimes it feels like I take ibuprofen daily. It ain’t prescribed but that’s chronic headaches for you. Also I take antidepressants for pmdd

52. What is your dream car? One that flies. That’s a nice dream. Ooooh a self driving one would be cool too. As it is I don’t have a license so dream car is moot issue. So I guess my dream car is a bus.

62. Do you still watch cartoons?Hell yeah. Steven Universe owns my soul and probs always will. I’ve also been watching OK K.O. recently with astranyx and it’s been fun.

72. Starbucks or Dublin Donuts?Whichever is open and closest to me. I have no preference I don’t really like coffee. I went to Crazy Mocha pretty regularly in high school cause that was the closest coffee shop to the school. So I guess that one. I still have some fond memories of that place.

82. Favorite ice cream flavor? Chocolate. Occasionally chocolate + other stuff like peanut butter or brownie or mint or more chocolate. Most of the time I’m a chocolate purist tho. I love chocolate soft serve or a nice scoop of chocolate ice cream on a cone. Especially the stuff from Dave and Andy’s back home. It’s super good. Klondikes are the only exception cause my fav Klondike is dark chocolate shell w/ vanilla ice cream but that’s different.

92. Have you ever been drunk? Yes. Not often. I tend to get tipsy pretty fast and stay tipsy for a while unless I’m downing shots. I did get pretty drunk the couple times I did pub crawls in Europe.

Who I Ship You With: Babe Heffron! I LOVE THIS KID OKAY. Talk about adorable. He’s so easily physically intimate, he loves to hug and touch and grab your hand behind your back so no one sees. And he’s a lot more chill when you aren’t sometimes (though he does have his moments, and you can rationally talk him through it), which means whenever you’re having a moment he can sit and listen and wait for you to sort of “burn out”. Or, if he’s mad at you, you both have quite passionate (maybe explosive) arguments BUT then Babe like the little puppy he is is ALWAYS the first to apologize with those big eyes and I mean okay, how can you stay mad at him?

Lil Blurb: It was freezing compared to the warm, Austrian heat. Why you thought this was a good idea, you didn’t know, but the rush of the cold water flooded your chest, your lungs, your throat, until your head bobbed above water and you let out a battle cry. It was the best feeling in the world–you wanted nothing more than to keep swimming all day, running among the trees and the shore with your friends until your lungs burned and the moon was out. 

From the dock, Malarkey, Perconte, Luz, and Heffron were shoving at each other, trying to pull off their shirts in the process. You, obviously, were still fully clothed, but they had no intention of keeping their shirts on (and now that the war was over, you openly let your gaze linger for a few moments). Treading water, you occasionally ducked your head under or making little waterfalls with your hands. You were impatient. You were waiting for the games to begin.

The second their bodies hit the water, you ducked under and reached to grab the nearest boy, splashing water in your victim’s face. Luz, you found, gasped for air and reached to shove you away, whining as Perconte found him and started trying to duck him under. Malarkey stayed back, chuckling, occasionally splashing at the pair, but remaining an observant bystander.

“Hey– where did Babe go?” You asked, looking from the pair of wrestling boys to Malarkey, who just shook his head.

A hand wrapped around your ankle and dragged you down, then traveled up to your waist, wrapping around and pulling you against his chest. It was Babe, you realized all too quickly. He lifted you up until you found air again, sputtering and shrieking, grabbing at his arms with your fingernails.

“Hey! Ow! Ow party foul! Foul!” He shrieked, refusing to let you go. You twisted in his arms and kicked your knees against his shin. Still, he wouldn’t let go. You looked to the trio for help, but they had started a race to see who could cross the lake first, meaning you were on your own. And your shenanigans weren’t done yet.

Face to face now, you wiggled your arms out from underneath his and grabbed his face in your hands. Surprised, he jerked away, but you pulled him back, bracing one of your hands behind his neck, guiding him in for a kiss. It was meant to be cheeky, light, shocking. That loosened his hold, just enough anyway, but suddenly your kiss that you meant to break was holding, both of you hungry. It was your own sudden burst of passion, blossoming along your chest, that shocked you. You were desperately grabbing at his neck, his waist, kicking with your feet, trying to keep afloat.

“Jesus, you trying to drown me?” He finally panted, forehead to forehead. You realized too late that you had leaned all of your weight into his chest. “I think you’re trying to kill me, Y/N.”

You reluctantly relinquished your hold on him, struck by the consequences of your mistake. “I didn’t think that one through,” you finally retorted hoarsely, your throat dry. “I’ve wanted to do that for so long, but I didn’t think it through.”

Babe laughed, reaching for your wrist under the water, his fingers travelling down to thread between your’s. “If you didn’t do anything, the day we were sent back home, I planned on making a move.”
