The most well-known and fearsome criminals in the Federation, the Black Toa are an infamous group of pro-Matoran extremists. Their numbers consist of convicts and misfits all banded together, each for different reasons. Despite this, each Black Toa shares the same goal: to be feared as Toa should be, both within and beyond the Matoran Federation.
It is unknown exactly how many Black Toa agents there are. They come and go as they please, fulfilling one-time contracts and assassinations or staying on to work for other disreputable organisations. However, it is known that there are four Toa that form the core of the group. These four are the most wanted individuals in the Matoran Federation, feared by the populace, and hunted by the secret police:
Kahlahnee (“a great expert”), also known as The Cursed One. This runaway convict from the hellish realm of Karzahni is the ever-grim and excessively cruel co-founder of the Black Toa. As his name suggests, he possesses remarkable expertise in a number of areas, from hostage capture and terrorism to racial extremism and disrupting law enforcement. He wears a great Mask of Suffering in the form of a lensless Kanohi Matatu. Forged by Karzahni himself, this mask allows Kahlahnee to cause immense pain to others without having to touch them, soothing his own pain at the same time. He founded the Black Toa for simple reasons: to justify and fuel his addiction to pain and to seek revenge for the thousands of years he suffered due to the actions of the Justicary.
Nowana (lit. “many forms”), also known as Polymorph, is another co-founder of the Black Toa. A relatively young Toa, Nowana is quite cheerful and egocentric. He wears the Kanohi Mahiki, the Mask of Illusion, which grants him his abilities: using the mask, not only can he can appear identical to any other person, he can completely alter his shape and appearance, on par with the Krahka's abilities. A deceptive and seductive agent, not to mention a pretty believable actor, his skills are all about gaining one’s trust, be it to obtain money, equipment or other valuable items. For this reason, he fulfils the role of spy and listener among the Black Toa. His reason for joining was simply so he could showcase himself, to be in the center of everyone’s attention, and to pursue life’s numerous luxuries.
Aida (“the mistress”), also known as Talon. This mysterious female Toa is as cruel as Kahlahnee and as cunning as Nowana, but more impulsive and psychotic then either of them. As with everyone else, she is excellent at what she does, namely interrogation, intimidation, negotiation, seduction and persuasion. She wears a black classical-styled Kanohi Pakari. It is unknown why Aida joined the Black Toa. Presumably, she simply sticks around for the thrill of it.
Suurata (”the devourer”). This dark creature was once a volunteer for an Alchemical experiment designed to enhance the efficiency of his digestive system. During the Dark Times, he was captured and mutated by a stray Visorak in the Archives, becoming a hulking, twisted creature known as Suurata, or “the Devourer”. The mutation amplified his digestive capabilities even further, granting him the ability to digest almost any material into its most basic elements and assimilate them into his body. He joined the Black Toa because of Aida: he seems to harbor a savage, sexual affection towards her, acting as her protector and lapdog in hopes of gaining her favor. Aida uses this affection for her own dark amusement, but seems to have grown attached to this mutant herself, in her own dark, twisted way.
