I have been a busy reader the last couple of days.
#77 Mad Man's Daughter by Megan Shepard
Wow. I loved this book. In fact I had to set an alarm on my phone to stop reading so that I wouldn't be late for work. It was different than the books I have been reading recently and I can't really compare it to anything else; it is pretty unique.
Juliet's father was a brilliant surgeon until rumors were spread that Dr. Monreau might be doing some unethical behaviors with test subjects. Her father allegedly dies and leaves her mother, whom later dies, and Juliet alone. Then Juliet comes across evidence that he is still alive and on an island with his assistant Montgomery.
Did her father do all the horrible things the other surgeons said that he did?
Why did he leave her to go to this island?
The answers are horrifying and intriguing. The plot twists are not what you expect and the book keeps you on your toes.
Highly recommend to read this book. 5/5 stars; Loved it.
#78 "Bar Code Rebellion" by Suzanne Weyn
This is the second book in the bar code series and it picks up where the last one leaves off. Kayla has still avoided the bar code tattoo and being arrested. She knows that a person's DNA is secretly accessible with the bar code tattoos, but that isn't all. There are so many other heinous things these bar codes can inflict upon their wearers.
Not only that, but Kayla's life may be completely different than she ever thought possible when she sees "herself" on television donning a bar code tattoo.
3/5 stars; liked this book.
#79 "Rikers High" by Paul Volponi
Martin is arrested for a minor charge but a series of events have kept him in jail longer than he thought. He ends up on Rikers Island and in a part of the jail that is known for violence. After an incident leaves him permanently scarred he is moved to a different section of the jail where he is allowed to go to school and continue high school. The guards can be violent, the inmates can be insecure bullies, and the teachers either legitimately care about the well-being of their students or are just cashing a pay check.
This book made me cry towards the end.
4/5 stars; really liked this book.
