Happy Birthday Dr Suzuki! Shinichi Suzuki was born on this day, Oct 17th in 1899 in Nagoya, Japan. Suzuki’s family owned a violin factory (still in operation today); however the young Suzuki had no interest in music until he heard a recording by Mischa Elman as a young man. After hearing Elman’s tone Suzuki decided to learn violin and eventually studied in Europe where he befriended the great Physicist Albert Einstein, who was also a violinist. After returning to Japan, Suzuki developed his method for violin teaching based on the assumption that every child can learn to play music expressively as they learn their native language by creating a nurturing and stimulating environment. Suzuki was able to leverage technology as Japan’s consumer electronics industry was developing, emphasized the role of listening to beautiful music from a young age! Suzuki’s method has been adapted for many instruments and voice.
