Sweden Wants to Host 2021 UEFA Women’s Champions League Final | 03.02.2017

Swedish Football Association and the City of Gothenburg has today informed UEFA of a common interest to stage the finals in the women’s 2021 UEFA Champions League.

Just before Christmas, UEFA decided that from 2019, the final of the UEFA Women’s Champions League to be held as a separate event. In recent times this has not been the case, then the ladies final automatically resolved in the same city that organized the final of the men’s UEFA Champions League.

Today (03.02.2017) is the last day to report to UEFA that they want to participate in the application process surrounding the club finals in 2019 (UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Women’s Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Super Cup).

Swedish Football Association will not apply for the finals in 2019, but has found that it is strategically important that this deadline to inform UEFA that an application will be submitted to the finals in 2021, once the application process begins.

International events is a high priority for the Swedish Football Association, said chairman Karl-Erik Nilsson. 24 May last we stand together with the City of Stockholm to host the final of the UEFA Europa League. In May 2020, we will organize the U17 European Championship for girls in Halland. Now the final in the women’s UEFA Champions League is an independent event, we want to immediately notify UEFA our great interest to soon stand as the organizer of this flagship women’s football at club side.

We inform UEFA that we want to organize the finals along with the City of Gothenburg, says the union’s general secretary Håkan Sjöstrand. Gothenburg has come up with a clear vision of how they can help to make the finals in 2021 at a festival and also how it can help women’s football continued development at a local level, nationally and internationally.

Czech Republic – Prague, at Eden Arena

Hungary – Budapest, at Flórián Albert stadion

Kazakhstan – Astana, at Astana Arena

Lithuania – at Kaunas Darius & Girenas Stadium

Scotland – Glasgow, at Hampden Park

Spain – Madrid, at Coliseum Alfonso Pérez
