‘Elobrian Sunrise’ is German producer Florian Gernuß, originally from Munich and currently studying music and composition in the western city of Essen. Florian combines musical ideas from various genres and eras to create a sound that is as nostalgic as it is cutting edge. His track ‘Start Again’ showcases his tasteful yet technical style of production, allowing for vocalist Max Peters to fully express the song’s narrative. It’s a jazz piece where Peters floating vocals takes the listener up amongst the clouds and Florian’s production provides the perfect device for flight. With just the right balance of acoustic and electronic elements, a rich palette of colours and textures allow for the strong vocal performance of Max Peters to take centre stage. TSUKI - Pareidolia
While SVNSET WAVES is famous around these parts for releasing one outstanding compilation after another, it doesn’t mean they can’t drop killer albums either, which brings us to TSUKI’s Severance Package. Reliably unpredictable, you can spend one minute buried in heavy footwork (“Kill Me”) and the next drifting through a wonky ukulele-led ballad (“Boy”) before falling into the lyrical depths of a soulful rumination stuck in traffic (“It’s Just Like You’re Dead”). As such, it’s fitting that we start off with “Pareidolia”, otherwise known as looking for patterns and familiarity where none exists. Every time you think you’ve got a handle on “Pareidolia”, something unexpected happens, and you have to start over anew. Give Severance Package a chance, and sit back and wait for the possibilities to begin to express themselves. Enjoy.
JUNE 2017 IS A GODDAMN GOOD MONTH
ĦILLS - Beautiful
Year after year, SVNSET WAVES continues to offer the best that rising electronic musicians have to offer. What separates this Amarillo-based label from the pack is how perfectly curated its compilations are; their SVMMER SVN collections evoke all the excitement and intensity that the warmest season brings, their RISING TIDES gather little-known artists that should command your attention. However, my favorite is easily the WINTER WINDS series, as they strike an impeccable balance between the soul-searching and small beauties located within the coldest months. ĦILLS’ “Beautiful” starts off rather distant, a faint clap as if heard from around the corner. Everything soon comes into focus, however, and that’s when “Beautiful” really hits. You can hear more on SVNSET WAVES Bandcamp; as always, enjoy.
