Dude, Hajime no Ippo is the shit!
It's an old boxing manga that started back in 1989, and is still a super popular shonen show that's currently got a new anime season running as Hajime no Ippo: Rising. It's pure, unadulterated spirit in a fighting show.
And yeah, there's character's "special moves" and some typical shonen BS, but all of the characters have cool, fleshed out back-stories, and almost every one of Ippo's opponents you feel connected to, and they all come back in some shape or form. With the fights, it's never a dull experience, and you end up cheering for both Ippo and his match-up almost every time, even with scumbag characters like Mashiba or Sawamura.
Seriously, give Rising a shot, it's currently running on Crunchyroll. When you're done with that, either check out the old anime or check out the manga in it's entirety. It's well worth the read, and you'll appreciate just how genuine of a character Ippo develops into.
