Rihanna Steals 'Scumbag Steve' Aesthetic, Claims She Invented It
The cover for Rihanna's latest album, "Ermahgad, I can haz talent?" borrows heavily from the "Scumbag Steve" internet meme, although Rihanna says it is purely coincidence.
After widespread criticism that Rihanna stole from the "seapunk" movement - an internet aesthetic that uses trippy, crudely rendered, undersea imagery and jewel colors - during her performance on SNL, the popstar has come under fire once again. This time it is because she used the image of the internet meme known as "Scumbag Steve" for her upcoming album cover. When asked about this, Rihanna insisted this was a creation all her own, "I have always found inspiration from combining hip-hop and alternative culture. This is just another example of that. Sure it bears a striking resemblance to 'Scumbag Steve' and yeah it would be a cynical exploitation of a subculture for profit if I used that imagery knowing someone else had come up with it, but that's not what's happening. I invented this, I've never even met someone named Steve."
The popstar also told reporters that the text of the picture is ironic, and not an admission of guilt. "I wrote that I stole the seapunk imagery because I thought it was a funny and edgy way to reference a controversy that I won't publicly own up to. You're left wondering what it's all about, and that's what I want my art to do; make people wonder what the hell it means." She also said the title to the album, which some say is a hodge-podge of internet memes the singer does not fully appreciate the meaning of, is just, "how her and her friends talk".
