Statement of Support and Solidarity for the #Swampline9 Blockade

The statement below was originally drafted before the injunction and subsequent removal of those blockading the Westover Terminal. Our call for support and solidarity only grows larger. 18 people were arrested on site on the morning of June 26th, including members of the GOAL Network. We have donated to the legal fund for those arrested as a result of this action and we encourage all member campaigns and members to offer support in any way they can. Since the morning of Thursday June 20th, a blockade has halted all construction at the Enbridge Line 9 Terminal in Westover. That blockade is an attempt to directly stop attempts by Enbridge to convert this decades old pipeline, that runs from Windsor to Montreal, and redirect it's flow to carry tar sands bitumen. The public process for opposing this pipeline alteration has been a farce and concerned community members, environmentalists, organizers, advocates, Haudenosaunee and Onkwehonwe folks, have taken a stand in a way that halts construction, conveys opposition and also minimizes any threat to public safety or inconvenience for the local residents. As pipelines intersect, so to do the reasons for opposing them. This blockade, a serious and important stand, is a space for all those who oppose to get involved and share their vision and skills. As animal liberationists, we recognize the importance of wilderness defense and oppose the tar sands, fracking, mining and uranium extraction, sprawl and environmental destruction. Protecting what is wild is just as important as advocating for other animal species that have been domesticated and/or held captive by human society. We urge all members and member campaigns to direct support to Westover and hope that animal liberationists in Ontario (and beyond) will use resistance to things like the tar sands as an entry point to both bring forward a liberationist perspective and also connect and be shaped by organizing with those who share concern.

WHEN: July 2, 7pm

On July 2nd, at 7pm, decLINE9 Cataraqui will be hosting an info session at the Sleepless Goat (91 Princess) to talk about the work stoppage and occupation that began on June 20th at the Westover Pumping Station in Hamilton, ON. The blockade effectively shut down work on an excavated section of pipe for over 6 days. The evening will include short presentations on Enbridge & Line 9, and on the blockade itself. This will be followed by a Q & A with some of the blockaders. Westover Station is located in the Beverly Swamp, the largest remaining forested wetland in southern Ontario. Enbridge Piplelines are on stolen Indigenous land, and Line 9 crosses or runs adjacent to 18 different Indigenous communities, including Six Nations of the Grand River. Considering nearly 90% of pipeline spills happen at pumping stations and terminals, the wetland and watershed areas in southern Ontario are at serious risk for groundwater contamination. Part of resisting this bullshit is knowing the land around you. We hope to see you for a fun and informative evening! Swamp Line 9 resist injunction!

Update from Westover blockade!!! Please forward widely! Four people are locked down, and the entire camp is on site and resisting the injunction. There is a solidarity demo happening across the street from the pumping station. There is one police van outside of the site. Police have blocked roads, so some media aren't able to make it, but there are lots who got through. The injunction came into effect at 10am, but people are going strong! Will update more as news comes in!

Cross-Canada actions in 12 cities on June 25 in support of Tar Sands blockade in Ontario

Direct Action occupation of Enbrige’s Line 9 construction site sparks solidarity actions #swampline9 #sovsummer

Protest actions are planned outside Enbridge offices and other key locations in a dozen cities across Canada in support of activists who took over a pumping station north of Hamilton, Ontario early Thursday morning. This action, dubbed Swamp Line 9, aims to prevent construction on Line 9 and block the transport of Tar Sands through Ontario and Quebec. This action is also part of the Idle No More campaign Sovereignty Summer. Line 9 is an existing pipeline that currently runs east to west from Montreal to Sarnia; however Enbridge has applied to reverse the direction of the pipeline in order to ship tar sands oil from Alberta to the East Coast.  This pipeline crosses the territories of 18 Indigenous nations along its route, including the Six Nations of the Grand River who have not given free, prior, informed consent to the project. Only the first leg of the reversal has been approved by the National Energy Board, and public consultations for the second section are scheduled for the fall. However, Enbridge has already begun construction on this project. Line 9 crosses dozens of major rivers draining into Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River, including Beverly Swamp in the headwaters of Spencer Creek, Hamilton's largest watershed, putting the drinking water of millions of people at risk of an oil spill. Sovereignty Summer is a campaign of coordinated direct actions to promote Indigenous rights and environmental protection in alliance with non-native supporters spearheaded by Idle No More and Defenders of the Land.
