Line 9 and the Tar Sands Project has bulldozed its way through Indigenous communities with no regard to their interest. It's an environmental catastrophe in terms of production, and poses an enormous risk all along its path. All because Canada and Enbridge want to increase their profit margins through the production and export of Tar Sands Oil. In stopping Line 9, we also commit ourselves to envisioning an alternative way of living and relating to the earth and each other.

Come one, come all to an incredible, kid-friendly good time including but not limited to: food, games, songs, puppetry, stories, and booths from local grassroots groups! Learn about and celebrate the work we all do to make where we live a better place, and participate in the culture of resistance with fellow community members.

Radio Interview about December 3nd Emergency Day of Solidarity

As a response to the call for action, last Monday, some of us went out and flyered within the community, hoping to increase discussion about and support of Elsipogtog. We had some great talks with people. This is all a part of fostering a culture of resistance against the tar sands, Line 9, and colonial expropriation. CALL FOR ACTION AGAINST LINE 9 - JULY 27!

On July 27th, join us in resisting Enbridge and tar sands profiteers! Line 9 is an existing oil pipeline running from Sarnia to Montreal. Enbridge has put in an application to reverse the flow of the pipeline (not currently in use, but previously transporting foreign oil into Canada). Their intention is to move tar sands oil across the country for export. This pipeline was built in 1975 for light crude oil, and will not withstand the higher temperatures and pressures required to transport diluted bitumen (not to mention the corrosive, toxic chemicals needed to make it flow through pipelines). A spill is inevitable. Enbridge has had over 800 spills since 1999. 

On July 25th, 2010, a section of Enbridge's Line 6 in Michigan ruptured, spilling oil into a stream that flows into the Kalamazoo River. Enbridge originally believed that the a blockage in the pipe was responsible for the alarms in their operating systems, so they increased the pressure in the pipe, worsening the spill. On July 26th, 18 hours later, they realized the spill had occurred, after millions of gallons of dilbit had already leaked into creeks, wetlands and the river, poisoning water 56km downstream. This was the largest on-land oil spill in US history. 

To commemorate the anniversary of Kalamazoo, we will stand together against the tar sands, Enbridge and Line 9. They are fuelling systems of capitalist exploitation and state violence and we oppose their expansion and continued existence. The tar sands are a death machine, and Line 9 is an attack on indigenous sovereignty, ecological integrity and the health of our communities. Line 9 crosses or runs adjacent to 18 different Indigenous nations. They have not been consulted by Enbridge in any meaningful way.

We are inspired by those blockading and occupying sites along the route of Line 9! Let's make this a summer Enbridge will never forget. This is a call to action: Organize a demo, drop a banner, head to the streets, use your own context and imagination to explore other possibilities! This is more than an environmental problem. It is an anti-colonial struggle. Use this day to build solidarity and to celebrate our shared survival & resistance. 

Fight the tar sands! Fight Enbridge! Fight Line 9! Fight those forces that threaten our integrity, our landbase, our existence!

On July 2nd, at 7pm, decLINE9 Cataraqui will be hosting an info session at the Sleepless Goat (91 Princess) to talk about the work stoppage and occupation that began on June 20th at the Westover Pumping Station in Hamilton, ON. The blockade effectively shut down work on an excavated section of pipe for over 6 days. The evening will include short presentations on Enbridge & Line 9, and on the blockade itself. This will be followed by a Q & A with some of the blockaders. Westover Station is located in the Beverly Swamp, the largest remaining forested wetland in southern Ontario. Enbridge Piplelines are on stolen Indigenous land, and Line 9 crosses or runs adjacent to 18 different Indigenous communities, including Six Nations of the Grand River. Considering nearly 90% of pipeline spills happen at pumping stations and terminals, the wetland and watershed areas in southern Ontario are at serious risk for groundwater contamination. Swamp Line 9 resist injunction!

Update from Westover blockade!!! Please forward widely! Four people are locked down, and the entire camp is on site and resisting the injunction. There is a solidarity demo happening across the street from the pumping station. There is one police van outside of the site. Police have blocked roads, so some media aren't able to make it, but there are lots who got through. The injunction came into effect at 10am, but people are going strong! Will update more as news comes in!

Cross-Canada actions in 12 cities on June 25 in support of Tar Sands blockade in Ontario

Direct Action occupation of Enbrige’s Line 9 construction site sparks solidarity actions #swampline9 #sovsummer

Protest actions are planned outside Enbridge offices and other key locations in a dozen cities across Canada in support of activists who took over a pumping station north of Hamilton, Ontario early Thursday morning. This action, dubbed Swamp Line 9, aims to prevent construction on Line 9 and block the transport of Tar Sands through Ontario and Quebec. This action is also part of the Idle No More campaign Sovereignty Summer. Line 9 is an existing pipeline that currently runs east to west from Montreal to Sarnia; however Enbridge has applied to reverse the direction of the pipeline in order to ship tar sands oil from Alberta to the East Coast.  This pipeline crosses the territories of 18 Indigenous nations along its route, including the Six Nations of the Grand River who have not given free, prior, informed consent to the project. Only the first leg of the reversal has been approved by the National Energy Board, and public consultations for the second section are scheduled for the fall. However, Enbridge has already begun construction on this project. Line 9 crosses dozens of major rivers draining into Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River, including Beverly Swamp in the headwaters of Spencer Creek, Hamilton's largest watershed, putting the drinking water of millions of people at risk of an oil spill. Sovereignty Summer is a campaign of coordinated direct actions to promote Indigenous rights and environmental protection in alliance with non-native supporters spearheaded by Idle No More and Defenders of the Land.
