Guest Spotlight - Dave and Allison Steinweg, Members of the 501st Legion
Allison Steinweg is a current SCAD Professor of Communication and a graduate of The University of South Florida where she studied Communication and Intersectional Identity. Over the years she has volunteered her time with groups such as Girl Scouts of America, The Clearwater Historical Society, The Clothesline Project, and Feminist Student Alliances. With a lifelong commitment to community volunteer work, nerd culture, and a love of Star Wars, the 501st Legion was a perfect fit. She has been involved with the Legion for 4 years, and has participated in more than 125 events. In addition to charity work and fundraising, Professor Steinweg is particularly interested in the study of leadership, gender, and race in the costuming community. When she’s not out nerd-herding and Wookiee-wrangling, she can be found painting, sculpting, or playing with her rescue mutt, Mango.
David Steinweg’s passion for the Star Wars universe formed at a very young age. He also grew up building model kits, RC airplanes, electronics, automobiles, and furniture with his father. These constant projects taught him building skills and an appreciation for tools, engineering, and making. As a Ph.D. (and SCAD professor) part of his contribution to the academic community is to give back to society in a variety of ways. As he searched for innovative and interesting ways to serve, he came across a costuming group that was well-known for their community service and high standards for Star Wars costuming. Combining service with the hobbies of costuming, props, and set building became the catalyst for his involvement in the 501st Legion. Throughout his 4 year tenure in the 501st, David has participated in 130 events, served on Squad Command Staff, and currently serves as Garrison Member Liaison for the Coastal Empire Squad.
