Is there a way to find out what skills are needed for a specific knitting pattern without having to buy the pattern?

The description says "It is worked top down in one piece," but their definition of one piece must be different from mine because you have to pick up stitches to do the ribbing around the neckline, and I don't know how the sleeves are attached (it's not raglan; they're knit perpendicular to the body). I've only managed to glean a little bit from the notes on Ravelry.

Anyway, my daughter wants this sweater, and I'm a pretty adventurous knitter but I've never knit a sweater before so I'm wondering if this would be an appropriate first sweater. Especially since I would probably want to make a few modifications (smaller v-neck so the sweater doesn't just fall right off her very sloping shoulders, different increases around the neckline because I hate doing M1s, decreases for the cuffs so she can roll up the sleeves).

Let's just say there's gonna be a lotta swatchin' goin' on.
