            His smile was soft and encouraging, calloused fingers leafing through the worn and discolored pages of his carefully guarded journal. A squirrel skittered by their feet under their booth where they sat at the diner, something that would have made someone in any other restaurant in literally any other town leap up in abject horror and disgust-- but in Gravity Falls, that was just about the most normal thing the teen pair had seen all summer. Turning a page with one hand, his other stretched out across the table to pick at plate of chili cheese fries they were splitting.

{ Dipper has a hard time with absolute silence. When it’s quiet, he becomes hyper-aware of every single sound, and it kicks his paranoia into overdrive. I also personally think that mindscapes are probably eerily quiet unless you’re talking or watching a memory---like, there’s no background noise, no nature to make ambient sound, nothing---so when it gets too quiet he sometimes worries he’s fallen asleep and he’s in the dreamscape. }

“Hey, Mabel. I’m so sorry. I never thought I’d have to make a call like this. I wish I could talk to you one more time, but maybe it’s better that I got your voicemail. I don’t want the last thing I hear to be my sister crying. Look…there’s no easy way to say this, but that thing I’ve been hunting? I took it down, but it bit me. I don’t know what it was, but I know…I know it was venomous. I can feel it. I’m sorry. I don’t think I’ll have time to call anyone else. You’ll tell them I said goodbye, right? The second alert is a text with a photo attachment. Dipper, looking tired, the colour drained from his face, but doing his best to smile. The arm not holding the phone is outstretched, as if for an embrace. The text reads: One more awkward sibling hug?
