thinking about the way Maisie grew up listening to Ed and Taylor and looking up to them and finding comfort in their music and now she's signed to Ed's label and opened for him and will open for Taylor next and they've both taken her under their wings and she is now their real life friend and gets to call them her mom and dad and and and

I just read that Ed liked taylor? I think they mean around the time they wrote songs together (red era) did ed know taylor before harry?

The short answer is if he ever did there was nothing to it - because they both knew Harry first. Ed has a nice neat quote to TVNZ in March 2013 which should be the end of it because Ed is decent:

However, this is tumblr so lets get into it:

Haylor / Sweeran timeline AKA why Sweeran was always platonic.

Ed and Harry met first.

Ed said they met "way" before WMYB was released on 11 September 2011. Ed said to the Spout Podcast:

“I’ve known Harry since I was 19 and he was 16. When we both started there was a guitarist called Chris Leonard we both knew who I wrote ‘Lego House’ and ‘Give Me Love’ with,” [...]“‘What Makes You Beautiful’ went No. 1, [my album] ‘+’ went No. 1 the same day and we’re both staying at the house at that point.

That narrows their meeting at Chris Leonard's house down to December 2010 (after x-factor) till they both turned 17 & 20 in February 2011. To Zane Lowe Ed said it was right after xfactor and they met up in Fulham, presumably to find writers for Up all Night after they were signed. In the below video it does sound soon after x-Factor:

I just started hanging out with Harry [Styles] back when I was living on my friend Chris’s sofa—Chris played guitar for those boys. There was another sofa there, and sometimes I’d wake up and this floppy-haired dude would be asleep on it. I just knew him as Harry. I didn’t watch The X Factor, so I had no idea what One Direction was. This was before they’d even released a single. We started hanging out. Chris said, ‘I’m in a boy band,’ and I was like, ‘Cool, safe, man.’

Nina

At some point in 2011 Ed breaks up with his teenage girlfriend Alice who is private and he said x is mostly about. In August 2011 Ed met Nina Nesbitt at a radio gig in Edinburgh who he dated for the next year and wrote Photograph and Nina about.

Taylor has lyrics of Lego House for arm lyrics in Sydney

The Sweeran timeline starts on 10 March 2012 when Taylor had Lego House lyrics—“If things go right, we can frame it and put you on a wall” for her arm lyrics at the Allphones Arena in Sydney, Australia. They then meet for a songwriting session 'soon' after. They were both on tour so ‘soon’ was 2 months later. Before this One Direction was already deferring to Harry when asked about Taylor in interviews (x, x)

Harry and Taylor met at the Kids Choice Awards 31 March 2012

This is well covered, they were immediately linked with the 1D boys teasing Harry about it (x, x, x). Harry and Ed were already close at this point, Ed was writing for One Direction and focused on becoming (more) famous. This is the point that even if Ed had had a crush on Taylor it's unlikely he would have followed up personally or professionally. As he said:

“When I first met Taylor I was in a relationship and she was in a relationship and we just formed a friendship through that,“ he said. "And both our relationships ended and we just carried on being friends. There’s nothing I really want more than friendship there. I know her very very well now and she knows me very very well.”

Haylor lore continues with Harry kissing a girl in NZ and Taylor writing IKYWT about it. 1D return to London.

Ed and Taylor finally meet

Ed and Taylor met on 15 May 2012 at the Ritz Carlton in Nashville when they write Run and both tweet and give lots of interviews about how instantly they clicked.

They cite their managers introducing them. Even if they did they would have had an elephant in the room of their very close mutual friend who they chose to write about.

A week later they meet again in LA and write Everything Has Changed. Taylor said to The Country Daily:

"His music video was playing in Australia when I was on tour there and I loved his voice and the way he sings and the way he crafts his songs," Taylor says. "I came back to the States and I said to my management company, 'I really want to work with this guy,' and they said, 'That's really funny because we just got a request from him to write with you.' It just worked out perfectly. I met up with him at one of his shows and we wrote some songs that day. He came to California and we wrote some more songs. The one that made the album is a duet called 'Everything Has Changed."

This is where the Haylor timeline collides again, Harry returned to LA and there was a short lived something. There is more on this in the Everything Has Changed post. On 16 June 2012 - the Ex'pression Session, (21:30) a fan suggested Ed propose to Harry, Ed responded "Nah, he's taken", someone joked 'by Lous' and Ed laughed 'innit'. However it was short-lived and Conor Kennedy happened in July.

Haylor gets back together.

On September 6 2012 Haylor were seen together with Ed and bandmates. Popstar reported “Harry and his bandmates watched Taylor’s final MTV Video Music Awards rehearsal. The couple later enjoyed a post-show meal at LA’s Katsuya with a group that included their mutual friend Ed Sheeran and Taylor’s bandmates.”

On 13 October 2012 Harry and Taylor go to Ed’s show in London. Ed shares a tour diary on 1 Jan with a video of him laughing and Taylor can be heard laughing off screen (1:55). Ed got Red tattoo in the video also.

Ed was at the One Direction MSG show and karaoke after party with Taylor and 1D. Ed continued to show up for them, writing songs about them, connected them with Snow Patrol and Courtney Cox of it all. posts about their songs:

For the rest of the story Ed is in the role of wing-man to them both, then Taylor is for Ed when he finally starts dating Cherry.

Ed has consistently been a supportive friend to them both and spoken about having a real friendship away from the press. I will end with this interview of Ed's at the 2013 Brit Awards, when Ed had been on the Red Tour and he was asked if Ed trusted Harry with his girlfriend, his response sums it up:
