Explore Your Archive Week: Sweet Archives
All this week Nov. 23 - Dec. 1 the Archives and Records Association UK is welcoming us to explore our archive. Each day has a new subject to explore. Today is #SweetArchives.
We found these images of Fanny Farmer candy stores that were photographed by James Blair Murdoch. The first image, “Fanny Farmer Candy Store Window” is from 1927 and the second, “Exterior of Fanny Farmer Candy Shop” is from 1930. The second photograph’s description states “Exterior of New Store at Broadway and E. Wisconsin Ave.
Fanny Farmer was not a homegrown establishment. They were founded in Rochester, New York in 1919 and were bought out in 1992. Our hometown heroes for all things sweet and delicious are Joseph and Lottie Helminiak, Polish immigrants who founded Quality Canndy Shoppes in 1916. The business is still going strong as Good Source Foods LLC. They have stores throughout southeastern Wisconsin and feature Buddy Squirrel nuts and Quality Candy. You can also shop online.
It’s as good a time as any to stock up on nuts and sweets for the upcoming winter festivities.
These images can be found in the digital collections and are part of the James Blair Murdoch Photograph Collection
