Hello world! I decided it's time I started to blog my production notes for the tracks I make. It could be anything from random inspiration to the technical side of things. This is my first so it won't be too dense. Here we go!
The latest track I uploaded, entitled "Rest Easy", was inspired by the exhaustion of the week and finding time at the end to just relax and spend it with a significant other. I wanted to make something not as aggressive as my usual, because honestly it hasn't been that type of week.
As usual, my production started off with Maschine by Native Instruments. It's how I start about 80% of my songs since it's really easy to try different things out. I wanted to have a nice airy, pad feel to it and I had some ideas for a little chord progression I was messing with at work earlier in the day. After finding the right texture, I moved on to the drum beat. I'm still a sucker for 80s drum machines and samples so I've been using my personal kit built mostly from Zenhiser's 80s collections:

After, I moved on to the bass line which was uses my favorite software emulation of analog gear... Monark, also by Native Instruments. I just wanted something light unlike most of my tracks where the bass synth is the main focus. After that and creating a line for the bells and some accents for the turnarounds I bounced all the stems and moved on to arrangement.
After bouncing, I import everything into Pro Tools where the majority of my work actually takes place. Any live part, such as the lead solo in the middle and main vox line are tracked in Pro Tools. I was initially going to go with the talkbox for my vocals, but I felt that the attack and timbre of the sound was a bit too harsh and dense, so I went with one of my go to vocoder patches on the microKorg.
After a few takes I had what I liked, the only thing left to do was do a simple arrangement, do a rough mix and make the track sit well with itself. For the reverb, I send all my tracks to an aux with an instance of Valhalla Room on it. So good and a steal at $50!

After that, I bounced and uploaded to SoundCloud. All in all, I'd say this one was under 2 hours so not too bad. If you have any questions about any gear/plug-ins I use feel free to comment. Thanks!
