swiTT Annual Meeting Looks To The US
The Swiss Technology Transfer Association (swiTT) is an association of technology transfer professionals. It was founded in 2003 and grew to be a respectable peer of the US Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM). Their recent annual meeting convened on January 30th and 31st. It attracted over 70 professionals, all of whom are active in the transfer of technology between public entities (such as institutes of public research and education, university hospitals, and other not-for-profit research organizations in Switzerland) and the private sector and start-ups.
Lita Nelsen, Director at the MIT Technology Licensing Office, and Felix Moesner, CEO of swissnex Boston, were this year’s guest speakers from overseas. Lita Nelsen gave an insightful talk on the challenges behind tech transfer. Her office at MIT follows the volume strategy for licensing support, given the difficulty of 'picking the winner' at an early stage. Her focus is “impact, not income.” At MIT, as with many Swiss institutions, there are more post docs than available academic positions. A postdoc may therefore be motivated to develop her or his entrepreneurial spirit and hopefully launch a start-up. Nelson also gave insights into the long-term development of a tech cluster. In the case of Kendall square, it took 60 years.
The second speaker, Felix Moesner, gave insights into the swissnex network, opportunities in the Northeastern US, activities of swissnex Boston, and potential collaboration with swiTT members. He also promoted the Science Corner at the BIO Exhibition in Philadelphia and the Ivy League tour. swiTT shows great potential for close collaboration with swissnex Boston because their focus is aligned with swissnex’s mission. Several leads were taken up and await followup.
