"Programs like Project ROSE ignore the fact that many people who work in the sex industry are not victims in need of rescue, but consenting adults who should not be arrested, coerced into diversion, or incarcerated for working. SWOP Phoenix also recognizes that sting operations like Project ROSE aim to bring in a large number of people, often relying on preconceived notions about who sex workers are, primarily targeting women in poverty, trans women, and women of color."

VIDEO: Laverne Cox wants you to know Monica Jones’ story, calls for action at #GLAADAwards

At last night’s 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles, actress and transgender advocate Laverne Cox called attention to trans people who have experienced discrimination and been largely ignored by the mainstream media.

Laverne Cox speaks out about Monica Jones while receiving the GLAAD media award!

"Laverne told the crowd, “just yesterday one of my transgender sisters…was found guilty of a crime in Phoenix, Arizona that’s basically called ‘manifesting prostitution,’ which basically means that as a trans woman of color walking in a certain neighborhood, you can be arrested for prostitution…There is so much work that needs to get done to make sure that never happens again.”

STAND WITH MONICA JONES: 4/11/14

Monica's re-scheduled court date is tomorrow. All of us in Phoenix will be arriving at the courthouse to show our support, and folks around the world will be participating in solidarity actions to show theirs.
