swordofsun replied to your post “Hey, do you have any tips on finding people to play dnd? I've been...”
Try looking for a local adventure league. Even if you aren't a fan of organized play it'll put you in touch with people playing and you can go from there. Also try meetup for any local groups.
Under the cut for spoilers, also content warnings and a brief soapbox about authors and writing.
CW for death and brief corpse description.
Red dies alone in a field from what appears to be head trauma and a broken neck after staring at a bull for several minutes. The scene and its aftermath are filmed in such a way that it's sort of ambiguous and not immediately clear whether it's a literal depiction of Red about to be gored by a bull or the bull is a metaphorical representation of Death and Red is just facing his death head-on. I can see both interpretations.
That is, you don't actually see what kills him. You see Red walking, then he turns and sees a black bull staring at him from some distance away. He kind of has a stare-off with the bull, and then it runs toward him in slow motion as he just stands there and faces it.
It then cuts to Ressler in a helicopter. He sees something, sets the copter down, and finds Red on the ground in a ditch, bloody and with his neck broken. As he calls it in, Ressler sees a black bull far off in the field, grazing peacefully.
So did the bull kill Red? Or is that just how Red imagined his death as it came for him and he faced it head-on? I like the latter interpretation better. Because it doesn't matter who killed Red. No one gets to claim that as their legacy or boast about it. What matters is that death comes for us all, no matter our sins or our power. And the scene itself is beautifully acted and shot, I have to say.
But it still seems like a cheap, hollow ending for such a character and such a show. Nothing we've been wondering about since season one is really answered. Red's identity, past, and real relationship to Liz are never clarified. It's a mystery spy thriller with no payoff. Nothing is truly resolved. It just ends.
And sure, life is like that too. That's the defense I most often hear for such endings. But I'm so tired of lazy writing being handwaved with "life is like that sometimes." Yes, but life has no authors! No one is crafting themes and story beats into life! If you're going to write a story, write a story, dammit. Otherwise what's even the point?
Anyway yeah. Adding that to the list of deeply unsatisfying TV and film endings from the last decade. Pretty sure the last show I watched with a satisfying ending that a) wasn't a miniseries with very limited episodes/seasons and b) didn't get retconned and undercut by a reboot no one asked for was...god, I don't even remember. Maybe Buffy?
For the fanfic trope ask game: Stuck in a Canadian Shack - bit of an oldie I know.
I have literally never heard of this trope, I had to look it up to make sure it was in fact what it sounded like (it is) loll. I started getting involved in fandom in the late aughts, so apparently just late enough to miss this trope!
In general, I tend to enjoy fics that involve being stranded together in relative isolation, BUT almost exclusively if it involves enemies to friends/lovers. I need them to hate each other when they get stuck lolll. So going to give this one a solid B!
There are a couple of J1ers who keep trying to steal FIMMF for JPad. And they're really bad at it! Which is somehow the part that upsets me because how do you fuck up fimmf? It's right there in the name!
It's like if you don't find fingers and mouths sexy just don't post? Your shirtless JPad pic has no business being in a fimmf post!
oh no.... that's just wrong in every way possible rip
swordofsun replied to your post “god, i can’t remember the details, but isn’t there a bit in one of the...”
Yes, I believe it's first introduced in one of the short story collections and then plays a larger part later. Air burials were introduced to me through that story.
yes! yes, that’s the one!! thank you! i had never heard of air burial before that story either.
i was reminded of it really strongly when caduceus was explaining the practicalities of layering graves to beau
i also was reminded of it in the live show when avantika was like “well we can just weigh your corpses down with rocks” and caduceus said “actually i have some very specific burial needs”
swordofsun replied to your post: optimists: hey Beau is determined to get Molly...
Also I don’t think it’s ever come up, bu it does length of time dead increase the DC on Matt’s spells?
hmm, you may be thinking about the resurrection ritual DC with every failed contribution from a fellow player... I think it goes up by 2?; the longer the time character stayed dead is - the repertoire of spells you could use to bring them back shrinks - when it's up to 60 seconds, you can use Revivify, up to 10 days - Raise Dead (or druid's Reincarnate), Resurrection and True Resurrection can bring someone who's been dead even longer, up to 100 years with the last one, but it's the most costly; there might be some additional changes with this campaign, maybe Raise dead cast the first day after death will differ from it being cast after 9th day, I don't think Matt mentioned anything about it, so far the only difference we got is the diamond cost of Revivify I think?
