Whatcha Doin’? ! [The Flynn-Fletcher Fam]

Candace had spent most of her time home the last two weeks holed up in her room, only appearing for dinners or other forced family bonding activities like game night. Or to help with chores. But, today, she was on a mission. Her mom wasn’t home, which was a relief, as it meant she wasn’t worried about getting lectured every five minutes. 

Slipping out of her room, Candace padded down the hallway, down the stairs, through the kitchen, and out the door into the garage. She knew that Ferb and Phineas were out there working on something for the expo that they had signed up for under Andrea’s insistence. And Candace was determined to figure out just what exactly was going on.

So, she found her brother and stepbrother and put her hands on her hips as she squinted at their invention.

“What are you doing?” she asked and signed (before putting her hands right back on her hips), trying to feign interest, though how they took it was up to them.

Gaming the System ! [Fern]

Right well that had been fucked up.

That being the Hunger Games dream. Now, Candace understood why people woke up twisted by that shit. She had always had a lot of nightmares growing up, so she had thought, at first, it was just her own weird dream. But then--realizing that it was some sort of...shared nightmare had been more unsettling than anything else. (Also, uh, Vanessa didn’t actually think she was hot, right? Right.) Her mom had been particularly affected. Sitting there and petting Ferb’s freakish green hair for a solid thirty minutes on Tuesday morning as they all sat around and tried to eat their pancakes.

Candace was just glad that Ferb had lived, even if he had gotten pretty messed up in the process.

It made her even more determined to...protect him? Yeah, we’ll go with that. Even if we won’t acknowledge it except for in Candace’s internal monologue. 

So, she set her plan into action a few days later, once everyone’s freak out had calmed down. 

First, she downloaded a bunch of sketchy movies and shit onto her laptop. Not onto the monitor and system that Ferb and Lawrence had built her for Christmas. She wasn’t dumb enough to think she was breaking that shit without taking a hammer to it. Then, she slunk down the hall to Ferb’s room and knocked on his doorframe. Mostly out of habit, but also because she knew the motion from the door swinging open would get his attention. 

“Hey,” she signed, her laptop tucked under her arm. “Can you help? I think I got a virus.” She held up her computer sheepishly.

Aren’t You a Little Young to Be Initiating a Rave? ! [Fern]

Candace had heard about the rave at the secondary from the hallways of PrideU with a sinking feeling in her stomach. It wasn’t long before it was confirmed that it was her family that was involved. Though, who was involved seemed to have crossed a wire somewhere. Surely, all these people knew that it wasn’t Ferb who had come up with the idea of a rave, let alone carried it out. 

She had called her mother to say as much, but her mother had just said that Ferb had admitted to it.

This pissed Candace off even more.

Maybe Phineas was the first place she should go after she got to the Flynn-Fletcher house. Don’t worry. He was going to get a piece of her mind, for sure.

But, first: Ferb.

Candace found him in his room. She knocked on the open door, out of habit, before she realized that wasn’t useful. Instead, she crossed the threshold into Ferb’s room for the first time and tapped him on the shoulder. 

When he jerked up to look at her, she gave him an apologetic little smile.

“Can we talk?” she said and signed.

Candace had been laying stretched out on her stomach on the couch in the Flynn-Fletcher house, doing homework. It was a Saturday afternoon and she was a little hung over from the party she’d gone to on Friday night, but was just glad she was home for the weekend. It meant she didn’t have to worry about arguing with the Worst Roommate in History.

Also, she could do laundry in a washer machine that didn’t smell like mildew.

However, she made the mistake of wandering into the kitchen, just as her stepdad got home from...some store, his arms laden down with bags. She had been asked to help bring things in, which, she wasn’t not going to do. While Candace still felt...really awkward in the Fletcher house, she wasn’t going to be rude. At least, not without her mom or brother around to smooth things over. As it stood, her mom was out in some knitting group she’d found and Phineas was working on his political club stuff. 

Once the trunk of the car was cleared out, Candace headed back into the living room, but stopped and pivoted when she noticed what was being pulled out of the various bags by her stepdad and stepbrother. 

“Are those...Halloween decorations?” she couldn’t help but ask.
