Welp. That was a loaded question.

Phineas was happy for Ferb. He really was. He and Mim really seemed to like each other, and the last thing Phineas wanted was to get in between them. But they didn't get along. There was no way around it.

"Uhhhh, she's fine," Phineas said with a shrug. "I dunno, I never really vibed with her, but it's whatever. I'm just tryin' to be supportive."

“Ohmigod, right?” Candace said, latching onto this at once as they made their way across the pumpkin patch.

She was glad that Phineas was, supposedly, on the same page as her, because she thought that it had just been her. It made her protective instincts flare up even worse than they had been.

“Like, I want to be supportive, but she gave me such bad vibes when I met her at the fair. I went over to tell her hello and, like, talk, you know? Because why not? And she was literally so rude to me. Didn’t answer any of my questions.”

Whatcha Doin’? ! [The Flynn-Fletcher Fam]

Candace had spent most of her time home the last two weeks holed up in her room, only appearing for dinners or other forced family bonding activities like game night. Or to help with chores. But, today, she was on a mission. Her mom wasn’t home, which was a relief, as it meant she wasn’t worried about getting lectured every five minutes. 

Slipping out of her room, Candace padded down the hallway, down the stairs, through the kitchen, and out the door into the garage. She knew that Ferb and Phineas were out there working on something for the expo that they had signed up for under Andrea’s insistence. And Candace was determined to figure out just what exactly was going on.

So, she found her brother and stepbrother and put her hands on her hips as she squinted at their invention.

“What are you doing?” she asked and signed (before putting her hands right back on her hips), trying to feign interest, though how they took it was up to them.

Shitty Shitty Bang Bang ! [The Flynns]

For the record: Candace thought it was extremely stupid that Phineas and Ferb got a car. 

It wasn’t like she was surprised. Phineas had always gotten whatever he wanted. No matter that Candace had begged for a car when she’d turned sixteen and when she’d graduated. When she was sixteen it was: we can’t afford it, you’re too young. When she’d graduated it was: oh, we are moving soon, it would be silly. 

But Phineas got a car for graduating. Even though he got in trouble at school and Candace had better grades than him.

Yeah. Sure. Whatever.

(Candace would much rather think about the car. Complain about the car. Then the empty section in Tiana’s that was Marisa’s favorite. Or how she had spent the last few days lovesick for...Vanessa. (Bleck.))

“Hey, dumbass,” Candace called as she stepped into the garage. “Mom said dinner is gonna be ready soon.”

Candace knew. She knew that it was Phineas’ idea to start that stupid rave that had caused Ferb to get grounded. Also, that someone had been suspended for drugs? Which meant that not only had he done something and thrown their step-brother under the bus for it, but drugs had been involved. Phineas had been close to drugs! She had no idea if he would take them or not, but Candace didn’t trust her little brother’s curious mind.

Not for a second.

When she’d brought this up to her mom, Linda had brushed her off. Saying that Candace was being paranoid, that Phineas wouldn’t blame Ferb (ha), that Ferb wouldn’t let Phineas take the blame (ha!), that obviously Phineas wouldn’t use drugs. He was a smart boy. Ha! Not that Candace was surprised. Linda had checked out on raising Phineas years ago and preferred just to...be his friend or something which she’d probably read about in some hippie book. Which was all well and good when you had a child like Candace who broke out in hives if she just thought about breaking the rules. It did not work on kids like  Phineas, who saw rules and thought that they were put there exclusively to be broken. 

So, that weekend when she came home from the dorms, Candace barged into Phineas’ room after knocking on the door and getting the okay. 

She immediately crossed her arms and cocked her hip out as she got her little brother in her sights.

“Okay, spill. What happened? And I know it was you. So don’t even try it.”
