“Can’t sleep?”
Send me “Can’t sleep?” to have a tired conversation with my muse in the middle of the night
It was always unnerving in the middle of the night when even the Circus was asleep. Doll hated silence. She liked being lost in the hustle and bustle of the Circus life. It was why when she didn’t have a roommate she got so scared. It was just too quiet, and she couldn’t sleep. Her thoughts would keep her up.
She walked to the mess tent, late at night to grab herself some milk to comfort herself. She could calm herself down from her frightened state if she could think a bit more clearly. She sat down at one of the dining tent tables, holding the glass between her hands and staring forward.
She jumped when she heard the voice behind her, for a moment, fearing for the worst. However, she immediately calmed when she saw a familiar face. She smiled.
“I shoulda known you’d still be awake,” Doll said, only slightly embarrassed having just panicked. “Nah, it’s way too quiet t’night. It’s givin’ me the creeps. What ‘bout you?” She gestured to Snake to sit down across from her.
She felt so comforted by Snake’s presence. He was quiet, sure, but his stillness made her feel secure. His quietness was scary to her. She had half wished a couple times that Snake be her roommate instead of some rookie, though she knew Snake was a fairly solitary person and wouldn’t like that much. Too bad.
It was fitting that Snake had found her, because what was really keeping her up were her memories that she so often thought of when she was alone. If left to her thoughts, she would be eaten up by grief. But Snake’s stillness gave her space to remember the positive things, the things she loved about the Circus, Snake being one of them. Her life wasn’t so bad when she had people like him around.
“Can’t sleep?”
WIt had been a restless evening where the Phantomhive's insomnia kept him from falling back asleep. That night in particular was worse for him than normal. A minor nightmare and a quickened heart rate was what fueled his insomnia. So gathering both robe and slippers, a quick yawn covered by hand, he decided to slip out of his bed chambers to take a short walk in the halls of his manor. The silence was deafening though peaceful. He knew at some point his butler would sense him and send him right back to his room, but for now he was safe. As mischievous as he could be, Ciel simply needed some air.
Not much time had passed as he made his way through the main rooms until he eventually reached the dining hall. "I'm sure something to drink wouldn't be harmful," he thought whilst slipping into the kitchen. It was a sight one never saw; a noble entering a servants area. "Besides, Sebastian would only deny me anything if I requested something this late. I won't have that tonight." As quietly as he could, he set off in search of something to quench his thirst without waking the servants in the rooms nearby. He still knew the kitchen fairly well from his memories of helping his father and brother cook for his mother on days she had fallen ill. That alone left a phantom smile on his lips.
Not a moment later was he startled by a voice from behind. A soft gasp elicited from him as he turned around thinking he would be met with his butler, but it was none other than Snake. With a huff, he settled himself from the surprise. "Snake. Ah--. No.. I couldn't sleep so I decided to retrieve a drink. I didn't think you among the others would still be awake yourself."

The young Phantomhive stood in stunned silence. It wasn’t often that Snake came to his side to protect him. Some time had passed since he recruited the reptilian man after the end of the circus troupe. Even after the few attempts he made to murder the boy, yet here he was standing before Ciel and ready to protect his new master before the enemy could dare bare an injury upon him. Pride swelled within the boy. To have recruited this one person himself among the others entrusted in his staff, having such a loyal servant was just another blessing. He didn’t see this man as much of a pawn to use as he did the others, but as a competent being there to aid him in his goals. He was well off with just the five in total he already had, but Snake? Ah... He had no words to express his respect whilst staring at the other’s back as he was sealed off from the battle before him, the other prepared to either join the fight or prepare to take off with him if necessary. His stance was firm and tall, his need to protect the teen at any cost showing. “Snake..,” was all he managed to mutter.

Most of the time, her siblings found her difficult to put up with. Doll was loud, bossy and energetic. Usually, the only person who was able to keep up with her was Joker, who she had a sneaking suspicion was just very fond of her having been the one to find her all those years ago.
But the person who she always appreciated the patience of was Snake. Doll was more cautious of what she said or did around Snake, in fear that she would be too much for him or that she said something he didn’t like. She didn’t have that fear with any of her other siblings, but maybe because Snake was newer she tried to impress him more or just generally be more likeable.
Even so, she always appreciated his patience when she got up to her antics.
“Oy, Snake,” She said one day, bounding towards him with her usual energy, about to spurt out a random fact she had learned. But instead of doing that, she calmed down a bit when she looked at her friend. She wasn’t a particularly sentimental person, but something about Snake always brought up the soft side in her. “You’re a great brother, ya know that? Thanks for puttin’ up with me, yeah? You’re awfully smart and patient and I appreciate tha’ about ya!”
