Sybert
**Includes Spoilers about “The Finest Hours”
So, my dad and I just saw, “The Finest Hours”. The movie was good, but I’m not here to give movie reviews, I’m here to talk about Ray Sybert (See-br-d), he’s not the main character of the movie, but he’s my favorite. Sybert works below deck on an oil tanker (aka, a huge ship). He is one of the most knowledgeable and practically leads the entire engine room. After the captain ignored Sybert’s recommendation to slow down the boat suddenly sprouts a hole where it was once welded. Chaos ensues from there until Sybert finds himself and his crew on a severed half of an oil tanker that’s taking on water quickly.
The rest of the crew are panicking, praying, then fighting over whether to deploy the lifeboats or not, and it’s just a mess until Sybert shows up. He gives the guys an estimate of what time is left and what his plan is, then gets started. He stepped up and became the leader, he also saved half the crew’s lives by cutting an empty lifeboat free and watching it crash into a million pieces. Anyway Sybert stepped up to the plate, everybody on his crew (with the exception of one) made it back home to safety.
Sybert was good at what he did, he lived for what he did, and he loved his job. He didn’t care if people liked him or not, and he wasn’t afraid to piss people off if he knew his actions were for the greater good. Sybert is somebody I want to be like someday, and I know most of you won’t read this, and that’s okay... your loss anyways.
