Minuit Machine: Sainte Rave (2020, 2021)
Watching the Sainte Rave event online made me feel I was in another world. Minuit Machine’s set sounded like if the end times had us done for and now left everyone to fend for themselves. Their pedigree of chilling, frightful darkwave / synthwave sounds of fright, uncertainty, and survival when tracks such as “DRGS”, “Prey / Hunter”, and “Don’t Run From The Fire” lyrically discuss chemical dependence, social friction, self-esteem, and escaping dead-end life situations. As much as Amandine Stioui and Helene De Thoury force urgency, personal introspect, and positive outcomes, there is a stark beauty in their style, their sound, and their high-resolution set-up of neon lights, strobes, and sharp vibrant colors built in Paris’ Galerie Au Roi.
Sainte Rave was Synth Religion’s showcase featuring Minuit Machine, (Stioui as) Imchaos, Sydney Valette, and Znzl. Of all the acts, Minuit Machine were the only ones to have their performance pressed. It’s a permanent audio document of their superb showing away from the flashing lights and the streaming realm, but adds another victory to their feverish discography. 300 copies each on pink / red or purple / turquoise vinyl create a memento of what may be Stioui and Thoury’s finest and brightest moment to date.
