A special twilight memorial is being held in Sydney's Martin Place tonight, to commemorate the two victims killed in the Lindt café siege with Man Haron Monis, 12 months since he took 17 people hostage.

Sydney cafe hostage 'made to kneel before being shot in the head'

A hostage killed during a siege at a Sydney cafe was made to kneel before being shot in the back of the head with a sawn-off pump action shotgun, an inquest heard on Thursday. Cafe manager Tori Johnson was killed by Iranian-born gunman Man Haron Monis, moments after several people managed to flee the coffee shop. Jeremy Gormly, one of the lawyers assisting the coroner, said: "Mr Johnson was made by Monis to kneel on the floor of the cafe. After a short lapse of time, Monis simply shot him without further notice or warning in the back of the head."

The end of the barrel was about 75cm from his head at the moment of discharge. Mr Johnson is believed to have died immediately.

It was the 34-year-old's death which led tactical operatives to force their way into the Lindt cafe in the early hours of 16 December. The inquest also heard that another hostage who died, 38-year-old barrister Katrina Dawson, was struck by six fragments of a police bullet which ricocheted off the walls when officers stormed the building to end the 16-hour siege. Three other hostages were also injured by a ricochet off a police bullet.

The Australian article 3000 extra police for Sydney on New Year’s Eve after fatal CBD siege comments on the aftermath of the terrorist holdup in a Lindt cafe in Sydney’s CBD, which resulted in the death of two civilians caught in crossfire. Given Australia is a relatively safe and sheltered country, the siege was extremely unexpected and truly, to be cliché, shook the nation. Questions over the gunman’s involvement with the Islamic State terrorist organisation have been speculated, but as of late it appears he was a lone gunman who was simply a religious extremist with very outspoken views. 

The article shows Australia’s want to still be a safe and sheltered country which caters to the people’s needs and makes sure they are as safe as possible at all times. The article also addresses the internet rumours which were surfacing where people stated that Muslim civilians would warn them not to be anywhere near Sydney on New Year’s Eve - which the police have said was not valid. This shows the police force taking control of a situation and making sure they can reassure the population of their safety. Their need to dispatch a further 3000 police officers further shows their catering to the population. Whether New Year’s Eve is a threat or not, the police officers will calm the people and make sure that there isn’t any trouble. The article further goes on to say that alcohol is more of a threat than terrorism, which would certainly placate the reader and also reminds them of the dangers of alcohol and drugs. 

Clearly, the government’s aim is to make sure that Sydney’s great New Year’s tradition isn’t altered by the people’s fear, and also to make sure that tourism isn’t impacted because of the siege. To address this worry, they used their power to dispatch a further 3000 police officers to make sure everything ran smoothly on the evening. By doing this, they successfully used their role in power to in many ways ‘fix’ a dire scenario. This seemed to work, given whether the NYE threat was legitimate or not, nothing ended up occurring.

Alphamama and I truly believe that the sentiment expressed through this event should extend to many other issues and situations which erode humanity. Thus, while the horror of the Martin Place event, should be allowed to settle and the community given a period of grieving to heal and rebuild, the solidarity should not be allowed to fade in time. May we continue to ride together. May we continue to bridge gaps between races and religions. May we continue to talk to each other in public places. May we continue to be there for those in need. May we continue to take immediate action when injustice strikes any of our fellow human beings.
