#3760 - Sylvicola notatus - Outhouse Fly
"spotted wood-dweller"
One of six species in the genus that are found in New Zealand.
First described in 1902 by English-born NZ biologist and geologist Captain Frederick Wollaston Hutton (1836 – 1905), as Rhyphus notatus.
The Anisopodidae, also known as Wood Gnats or Window Gnats, are a small family, with a little over 150 species in 4 genera. Some are saprophagous or fungivorous, but little else is known about their biology. This species is known to breed in decomposing organic matter, such as compost heaps, or outhouses, though.
