Favorite Multi-Episode plot arc.  Can be more than one, go nuts!

I have something to say about almost all of the arcs of Arc V, but because I see almost no love for it, I’ve got to say that the Friendship Cup Arc from the Synchro are some of my favorites.

Haters are always on about how forced it supposedly was; but I honestly think they forget tournament arcs are by design, forced, there’s always an artificiality to them that writers use to rise the stakes, but even then, in the back of everyone’s head there’s always going to be the question of “Why are they bothering with this tournament instead of doing x?”

And Arc V answer to this question was actually one that I seldom seen used in other settings: yes, they are literally being forced into this, they are little better than being prisoners (and they already know what being a prisoner in the city is like.) and because they are considered such, obviously they are not going to trust them into communicating with one  another with the exception of duels, which are on everyone sight.

The reason why the Lancers aren’t doing what the came to do in the first place it’s because they already tried, failed and were detained by the local authorities, with the only option given is the participating in the FC, it’s obvious that at worse is a trap set by Roger, and at best they are stalling for time until they have a better choice or circunstances force them to do something else.

(Which by the way, totally acted upon the moment Academia invaded.) 

And really, even if they weren’t prisoners, keeping participants isolated is something they do anyway, because the FC is a ruse, the Council cares nothing for the supposed purpose of bringing Tops and Commons together, it’s just a distraction sent to appease the Commons and an outlet for violence for both sides, and what better way to feed the drama than to keep people alone with their own thoughts rather than actually talking to others and god forbing forming actual bonds that would threaten the actual end of the event.

On the charcaterization side; this was arguibly the one arc where Yuya and the Lancers grew the most as people, because nothing is better for growth than throwing them out of their comfort zone, Yuya who still heavily relies on other to do anything is left to figure things out on his own, Yuzu is being chased and unable to contact the people who trust her and support her too but still maanegs to find friends along the way and reach others, Reiji has no influence in the City and has to rely on counted people and we get to see how he outsmarts Roger despite all of that, Reira is faced with what does she wants rather than following orders, Tsukikage manages to confront Sora about his brother, Sawatari finally consolidates himself as duelist ...i could go on, but I think I’ve said enough for now.

They staff set all those boundaries on themselves and still worked with them rather than against them, and finalized the FC with the magnificent duel of Yuya vs Jack that was the culmination of every theme in the arc and the series overall.

For the people that say the Synchro Arc was filler. They do realize that a lot of Zarc's foreshadowing was from that arc right .... I mean Synchronization, Yuya's continuous ability to talk to duel spirits, the image of a red eye destroying an unknown city, the four Yus going berserk and syncing, Yuya's duel against 227 referencing Zarc's duel. Hell the "We Shall BE ONE!" line came from here. If anything the Synchro arc was just setting up the final villain.

I mean foreshadowing has always been heavy from the ep 1, but the synchro arc was totally riffe with it.

Alas, that’s irony with impatient people in fandoms, they complain about wanting the plot already and skimmed through all “non-important” episodes calling them filler and barely paying attention and when the reveals come they all go like: “JFC This came from literally nowhere!”

While the rest of us are just like: “Dude, really?”

This is just my thought, but one thing that really screwed up the Synchro arc was that the FC participants were locked in individual rooms and not allowed to interact, let alone team up to do anything. So not only were we shortchanged for anything related to stopping Academia, but also character interaction.

I can understand wanting more character interaction but...

Look the thing is... that was sort of the point? The City Council never trusted the Lancers the same way they never trusted Roger, and where just waiting who would come up as “winner” in their little showdown so they could team up with them and rip off the benefits of it.

I would have honestly thought them foolish if they would have let them run around to plot against them, considering how thir entire modus openrandi when it comes to ruling the city was basically divide and conquer, If the Tops and the Commons are split they will be far bussier dissing each other to think about the people ruling them.

And when the Commons started to team between themselves - rather than fight for scraps thrown at them  - they made the FC as distraction, since the Commons far outnumber the Tops they obviously don’t want them to team up or anything so the isolation is the answer.

Why would they treat outsiders any different then?

If that’s the reason you didn’t like the arc then fine, but going and claim that it was what ruined the arc is a bit extreme and shortsighted.

Uh.. I think I’m done discussion the Synchro arc, just let the matter rest specially if it’s to do nothing but complain again -_-

I agree with almost everything from your last post (more Serena! and while you didn't said it More Yuzu!), but I have a legit question, do you really think it was necessary for Sychro to be a third of the show? for that matter was it really necesary to have another tournament arc? I am no calling it filler, I don't even know what kind of hate it gets from the fandom, since I don't check wath fandom as a whole says, but just a couple of blogs.

As I’ve said in the post the Lancers oarticipation could have been mentioned early as a possible goal for recruitment purposes rather than make it 100% something they were forced into other than that (and the worry that Yuzu wouldn’t participate) I had no problems with it, and I do think the FC had an important role into the City’s worldbuilding and their “competitive” society and the way it was set up and billed as a “peace offering” to the Commons was spot on.

I’ve never understood the “third part of the show” I’ve never seen anyone complaining that the Standard arc is also a third of the series after all :/

I’m sorry but I can’t believe I have to say this:

Like I’ve tried very hard to understand people’s obsession in this fandom with anything related to the Xyz characters, dimension and how apparently many of them feel that they were cheated off a full Xyz arc which according to them had “so much potential” and as it has already become common in this fandom they blame the “wasted time” into the Synchro Arc

Personal feelings aside, I actually went and asked some people about which potential they were talking about, and while the wording was different almost all of them had the same two answers (and sometimes both in the same answer):

Explore the destruction of Heartland and emphatize with the Xyz characters

Dealing with more plot-related stuff (interestingly I found some division on what these “plot-related stuff” supposedly was)

....So I’m just going to adress these two points separately:

If the writers or the director wanted us to emphatize with the Xyz characters (basically angsting for or about them) there was no need for full episodes of it, much less a full arc of it, I’ve seen people justifying the reasoning saying that other charaters needed to face Academia’s crimes in full flesh or something like that, and I’m just like, where were these people during the Battle Royale? Did they forgot that the characters already lived in the flesh what Academia has done, or do they seriously think that because it was to a much smaller scale it took away the emotional shock of the characters, or the meaning, or the entire purpose of it?

Now to the second point: I beg to you tell me, what exaclty plot related stuff could they have dealt with in the Xyz arc or dimension that could not have been dealt with in the Fusion dimension? Because all the development and little plot reveals where handled by Yuya, Edo, the Grace Sisters and even that Noro guy, and since I already established that angst is not a feasible reason, much less a plot point, because what little we got about the Arc Area Project and the confirmation that the process was indeed revertible, what exactly other plot threads were dealt with in it? Because I sure don’t remember anything else.

Heck we didn’t even got the so clamored answers or even hints about what exactly is the nature of the dimensional counterparts, and yes I still think it’s funny and ironic that following the episode they all left Heartland the intro was changed to explain to us more about the Yu Boys than in any of the Xyz episodes.

No, i’m NOT going to make a defense for the Synchro Arc, I’ve done more than enough and other people too, but I’ll say this: 

Say whatever you want about the Synchro arc flaws but don’t you dare to call it filler unless you can come up with a realistic explanation about how exaclty the character development, the resolved plot threads and characters could have ever been extrapolated to either an Xyz Arc or absorbed by a two-year long Fusion arc.

The synchro arc sucked out all the interest and enthusiasm from the fandom. Now everyone is just glumly waiting for the anwers regarding dimensions and counterparts and nothing else.

I’m ….not sure if you’re a new follower, because you couldn’t be in my blog that long without knowing that I loved the arc.

Really the worst of this opinion isn’t that you clearly didn’t like the arc, I wouldn’t judge about that, to each their own, but you’re basically repeating the exact same complaint that happened in the first season, that the series has some type of “missing plot” syndrome because they won’t explain anything about one detail you’re explicitely interested.

Like if at this point you can’t tell that the series has an overachieving plot that is being delivered in parts, then you probably shouldn’t be watching Arc V, because you clearly have no patience for it.
