“Grey! For the love of...”
Grey looked over his shoulder at the synth, curious as to what deity or entity it would pray to.
“...Nuka Cola”
In the dim night time light of the Institute the synth had followed Grey, pleading for the human to return to his hidden lab.
“You don't need to be out here”
“I need things” Grey muttered as he clicked open the lock to the supply cupboard.
“Just tell me what you need and I'll get it for you”
“Quicker if I just get them”
“Well maybe if you just used the names of equipment rather than vague hand gestures!” the synth hissed while it paced nervously in the doorway. “You're going to get us both killed...well...not you but it would be straight to the SRB for me! Maybe I should just go see the Railroad now shall I?!”
Grey grinned to himself as the synth ranted, he felt for a moment pride in his work, the synth was genuinely in fear of his own mortality.
“It wont take long...” he said now feeling guilty for causing the synth distress… that or he needed a drink.
“...Mr McCorduck?” a small soft voice sounded behind them.
The synth spun round, trying his best to shield the view in to the cupboard “Shaun?...what are you doing wandering around at night? You should be in bed”
Grey kept his back to the door, McCorduck? Oh yes that was his name, he hated it.
“I know...but I couldn't sleep” the synth child shuffled it's foot. “Mr McCorduck…?”
“You can just call me Fred”
Grey rolled his eyes, he hated that name too.
“Fred” Shaun started again “I heard you travel a lot outside”
“I don't do that any more” the synth smiled “It's really scary out there”
Shaun looked disappointed, “oh, I was really hoping if you went out again you'd maybe bring me something back”
“You want something from outside? Like what?”
“Well like an old clock? I want to make something out of it”
Grey smiled to himself, remembering when he used to pester Kellogg to bring back things. Grey decided to remember to bring back a clock for the kid.
“Well like I said I'm not doing that any more, now back to bed with you” The synth tried to usher Shaun away.
“Is it true you once brought some raiders in here?”
Raiders? Grey had to think about that for a moment, oh wow he had! Sil and that weird little fluffy blue coat guy..Brian? Grey had had a lot to drink that day.. did they really end up throwing a Mark 1 Synth off a platform? He winced at that.
“Raiders? Do you really think anyone would be...stupid enough to bring raiders in here?” The synth raised his voice slightly at the word 'stupid'.
Okay maybe it had been a little stupid. Sil had wanted a tour, she'd even brought a camera. Yep that had been stupid. Sneaking around like this was stupid too, if they got caught the synth would be destroyed for sure and Grey would end up most likely locked in his room again. He listened to the kid still asking the synth...Fred questions, they seemed to be moving away. He sat down on a container still listening, he'd wait till the coast was clear, then head back to the lab.
