The rotting corpse of a once great space station lay to waste, like everything else, in the dirt of Pandora. Twisted metal and wired veins; the guts of Helios spewed across dead earth, admittedly the sky looked a little empty without it.
He follows the crude pathway through the wreckage, dust and rocks shifting underfoot. His visits here were sparse and gapped with months; it was always only business.
Day had quickly turned to dusk, however, orange seeping into purple and pink; while shadows cut against yellow sand and a breeze pushed through the bones of the station.
He pulls at the front of his shirt, peeling cotton from skin; grateful for the evenings cool kiss.
It all starts with a groan; low and metallic, it grates and rattles. He pauses, twisting his head back. A rumble and several clicks; his brow pulls in puzzlement.
But she’s on him and they’re falling, and his grasping for something – anything. His fingers grip blindly, fisting handfuls of cloth. He hits the ground hard, jarring his elbow, stretching the stitches in his side. There’s hair in his mouth and chaos against his chest; it all happens so fast.
She slides between his fingers and he coughs up the air from his lungs, rolling to the side in an effort to push the dirt from his mouth.
Her voice is soft; feathers against cold metal; water in a desert.
“Yeah, well.” He groans, turning to look at his saviour. “Guess I owe you one.”
