Paperback Book Day - One of the things that led to lighter books being developed was the commonality of the railway. The railway was indeed a faster form of travel across vast distances, but one could still easily spend a week or more in a carriage as it covered the great expanses of countryside. While books were a fine way to pass the time, they were dearly expensive and quite large and heavy, making them both risky to carry and inconvenient to read while on the road. So it was that the first paperback books were aimed at railway passengers. Since that time paperback books have become increasingly popular for both their reduced price, as well as their portability.
Share A Hug Day - There’s something amazing about a hug that just makes the day so much better. Whistleblower Day - Commemorates the day our Founding Fathers recognized the need to protect those who report corruption when they see it. The day reminds us to honor and support the people who speak up about fraud, abuse, or waste. A whistleblower is an individual who reports suspicious activity. These activities include violations, exploitation, misrepresentations, or other infractions. The activity may be within an organization, either public or private. Notably, the history of whistleblowers is long and often trying. While legislation now protects whistleblowers from retaliation by their employers, they still carry a heavy burden. Usually, once they have filed a report, legal battles follow.
World Day Against Trafficking In Persons - Human trafficking is considered a modern form of slavery. This illegal act involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain labor or sex. Traffickers use violence, manipulation, or false promises to lure their victims into trafficking situations. Trafficking victims usually experience physical and/or psychological abuse. They might also endure sexual abuse, food and sleep deprivation, threats to family members, and isolation from the outside world. According to the International Labor Organization, there are over 40 million victims of human trafficking around the world.
