Also, while I could understand Tarik’s confusion, Ratthi wasn’t wrong. I ran a quick query on hatch shape in my media storage, focusing on popular adventure and suspense/horror dramas and the high incidence of hazardous fauna, raiders, human and/or bot murderers, and/or magical fauna, unidentified but terrifying dark presences, and straight up monsters associated with round hatches. I sent the results into the team feed.

Okay, so one thing I had with Network Effect was that Thiago annoyed the hell out of me: calling Amena daughter (yeah, maybe it’s cultural—but maybe it’s just really annoying); almost getting MB killed; calling Mensah by her first name in front of MB (yeah, maybe it’s cultural but also maybe he’s stressing the fact that he gets to use her first name when MB always refers to her as Mensah or Dr Mensah?) and just generally…

So it delighted me to find that Iris shares my feelings

(ART actually was joking. Mostly. Iris told Thiago that it had undergone a traumatic experience and would verbally act out until it had fully processed what had happened. Thiago said he knew that but he also thought it enjoyed terrifying people. Iris was pissed off and just smiled in an “I’m going to pretend you aren’t serious so I don’t have to fight you right here in this corridor” way.)

A little musing on ART-drone’s dimensions:

The drone was a thin oval platform fifteen centimeters in width with a lot of folded-up armatures tucked up against it that were supposed to be helpful in planetary exploration or contact missions and, knowing ART, who knew what they actually did.

It’s worth bearing in mind that a teaspoon is 15cm long, at least my teaspoons are mostly about that, this one is:

During the book we gather that ART-drone is actually quite BIG and powerful, it can lift stuff (not to be too spoilery) and right at the end:

“Let’s everybody shut up and get in the flyer,” Iris said, and shouldered ART-drone’s limb, taking part of its weight.

ART-drone’s size was awkward and Iris had to help me heave it into the pseudohopper’s cabin. She shoved me in after it, climbed in, and pulled the hatch shut

That’s obviously not 15cm diameter—Iris has to help MB carry it due to weight and size—so I guess 15cm high and more like a roomba?
