Donnie Darko is by far one of the best love stories that has stood the test of relative time. Few sacrifices in art have matched what is portrayed in that under-appreciated film. However, the cover of Tears for Fear's ironic song Mad World by Gary Jules has gone on to receive wide acclaim and popularity. Being used in multiple soundtracks, trailers, T.V. shows, and recovers by other artists. Many still berate it for removing the intent of the upbeat tempo of the original, which creates a great juxtaposition between the depressing lyrics and the somewhat "happy" sounding drum and keyboards. I still can't imagine any better song for the ending of Donnie's tale.
Goodness, now to talk about this mix that has me bobbing my head every time I start it up again. System Nipel returns Mad World to its dance inspired roots and gives it a solid D 'n' B track. Definitely a trance worthy song making me move without even knowing it. Can't get enough! Reminds me of the hectic cycle that Donnie finds himself in. I still love the inclusion of the Gary Jules cover which makes this a familiar experience, but fresh in the sense that is doesn't feel as depressing.
If there ever is a remake of Donnie Darko, I wouldn't mind this having something to do with it.
