part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7
——————————
When Tubbo woke up it was to the sound of shoes shuffling and loud voices.
His eyes cracked open slowly, and already a dull pain raced against his skin. It felt like bugs were crawling over his face tickling the skin. He tried to look around but could only make out blurs of color. No matter how hard he tried his right eye stayed shut.
Slowly he reached towards his face and felt itchy fabric against his fingers. Bandages. He had bandages over his eye.
He groaned and tried to tear off the bandages to figure out what was wrong before a hand gently grabbed his wrist.
“Don’t do that kid.”
“Tubbo!”
He flinched away from the loud voices until two familiar faces leaned over him. They were still blurry, but he’d lived with them for too long to not recognize them.
“Techno...Tommy,” he groaned questioningly.
Both his brother’s faces lit up at the sound of his voice. Although Techno contained it much better than Tommy who immediately threw himself into Tubbo’s cot for a hug. His younger brother almost squeezed the breath out of Tubbo’s lungs with how tight it was.
“I was so worried big man, fuck,” he whimpered.
Tubbo choked out a small laugh; the movement burned the skin around his mouth. Immediately Tommy jumped back off of him, settling down onto the cot with Tubbo’s hands in his own.
“Sorry sorry, shouldn’t have jumped on you,” he smiled.
Tubbo shook his head and pulled Tommy back to his chest, “It’s okay. Fuck dude, what happened? I feel like shit...”
“At least you feel anything, we were kinda worried about that,” Techno’s gruff voice pointed out.
Tubbo finally turned to his eldest brother and reached his arms forward for a hug. It wasn’t often that Techno gave them comfort, but it was still nice. It reminded Tubbo of when he was little and Techno would read them to sleep or when he wrestled them on the ground.
To anyone else, Techno would have seemed indifferent, but the fact that he was at the infirmary at all told Tubbo all he needed to know. His older brother never wasted his time.
When Techno finally released him he fell back with a soft sigh, “Why I’m all banged up?”
Techno frowned and leaned closer to the small cot, “You don’t remember?”
Tubbo shrugged and tried to dig through his brain for anything, but it felt a lot like trying to swim through mud. Only bits and pieces came back to him. Slowly, he remembered waking up Ranboo and getting carried...somewhere.
Finally, he remembered the appearance of the two giants, the giants that had captured the guard.
"Giants? What how did-What happened to my face?"
“Burned,” Tommy squinted, “Fucking jelly giant got you good before Ranboo could do anything.”
“He- what?” Tubbo gawked.
Beside him, Techno just nodded, to Tubbo’s surprise.
“You know- Techno what?” Tubbo gasped.
“Oh,” Techno shrugged, “It’s okay. Your...friend is safe. For now at least.”
Immediately Tubbo shot up from the cot, “Huh?”
“It’s okay,” Tommy reassured, “He's fine; the guard is sparing him for a bit.”
Tubbo glared at his brother and threw off his blankets. He couldn’t believe he’d tried to help Ranboo just to get him captured by the guard. He didn't even know how long he'd been out, and Ranboo had been injured in the fight.
“A bit?! What do you mean ‘a bit’?”
Techno huffed drawing their attention. Tubbo noticed quickly that the soft look from before was gone.
The guard member was back; his brother was gone.
“It means we were waiting for you to get up to discuss the giant.”
“Well, I’m up,” Tubbo scowled, “Time to discuss.”
Tommy pushed him back down onto the bed. A frown spread across his scratched-up face.
“Dude you just woke up, shouldn’t you rest a bit-”
“I can rest once Ranboo’s okay,” Tubbo said sternly, turning his attention to Techno, “Take me to him.”
Techno just nodded and reached his hand out. Although the fingers blended together in his warped vision, Tubbo felt them gently wrap around his own.
“I’m gonna guide you okay, just follow me,” Techno whispered.
The pair walked for what felt like forever. Behind him, he could hear the stomping of Tommy’s footsteps and the occasional huff whenever Techno said anything about Ranboo.
However, all Tubbo could focus on was finding his friend.
He had no clue how badly injured Ranboo was after the fight with the other giants, and he didn’t think the guard would be too kind to him either...
Tubbo only paused when a loud squeal came from somewhere in front of them. Techno’s steps came to a halt too, and for a second Tubbo tensed up, preparing to be attacked.
It was only when a small blur of color came barreling into him that all fear left his mind.
“Michael!” he grinned as he pulled the toddler close to his chest. The kid squeaked happily and dug his hooved hands into Tubbo’s shirt. It hurt a bit, but the pain was overshadowed by the joy he felt with the boy in his arms.
Behind him, Tommy groaned and kicked at the dirt.
“What I don’t get any love? Bullshit.”
Gently Tubbo put Michael back down on the ground and heard him slam himself into Tommy. The kid’s laughter made the tension seep out of Tubbo’s chest.
“Come on,” Techno huffed pulling at Tubbo’s hand again. He didn't even seem to care about the piglin's presence.
They continued on for a couple more minutes, with the ground becoming progressively tougher under Tubbo’s feet. Techno even has to catch him a couple times before he could trip.
Even with his blurred vision, Tubbo could tell they were in the woods. The calming smell of dew and flowers washed over his nose.
The piglin was the first sign they’d reached their destination. He heard Tommy yelp as the tiny piglin jumped out of his arms and started bouncing happily.
“Pa! Pa!”
Tubbo smiled and followed the boy with a matching grin. Sure enough, after they passed a couple more trees a giant black and white blur came into view.
Ranboo was curled up on the ground with smaller figures moving around his long limbs. Tubbo couldn’t really tell from where he stood, but it looked like they were wrapping something around the giant's fingers.
“Boys!”
Tubbo turned to the voice before being immediately smothered in warmth. His dad’s chin rested on the top of his head as he leaned into the touch.
“God I’m so glad you’re okay,” his dad sighed into his hair, “We were so worried.”
Tubbo wrapped his arms around his father as much as he could, but the tightness in his collarbone protested.
“Me too.”
When Phil finally pulled away he ushered the group forward, closer to where the giant slept.
“So...guess we’ve got a bit of an elephant in the room huh?” he laughed softly.
Closer now, Tubbo watched as Wilbur and Ponk wrapped long ropes of bandages around Ranboo’s fingers. Even with his blurred sight, he could see the bright red skin that laced up and down the giant’s arms.
“Dad...Please don’t hurt him,” Tubbo muttered slowly, “He- He's not dangerous. He would never hurt anyone I-”
His dad interrupted him with a laugh before he could even finish.
“Were not going to hurt it...We just can’t put too much trust in it either. We have no idea what its intentions are, but it did help us.”
Tubbo frowned and tried to search for any lies in his dad’s words, but he seemed earnest.
“He,” Tubbo corrected, “He's nice.”
“Sorry, a force of habit I guess,” his dad shrugged.
Tubbo looked back at the giant and pressed his hand against the soft fur on his arm. The muscles underneath twitched at the touch, but Ranboo’s eyes stayed closed.
“He's been up and down for a bit,” Phil explained slowly, “But he'll be okay. Ponk already put some numbing cream on his burns; they just have to finish the bandages.”
“What- how are you so okay with this?” Tubbo asked after a moment.
His dad looked down and seemed to think for a moment before patting Tubbo’s shoulder.
“He saved you. And got all of us home. We were hurt and had no way of protecting ourselves, but he still got us home...How could I turn around and kill him after that?”
Tubbo frowned at the mention of killing his friend, but appreciated his father’s point.
“Are you going to let him free?”
Phil laughed again and reached behind him to grab something. Tubbo noticed as Techno dug through his bag before shoving something small into his dad’s palm.
“Of course not, we have a whole town to protect,” his dad said sternly, “It would be foolish of me to let him go.”
“But dad!” Tommy interrupted running up to the two. He had a thick roll of bandages in his hand from helping Wilbur and Ponk. “You can’t just-”
Phil shushed Tommy and shook his head at the younger boy. It seemed so domestic, but Tubbo felt like his heart was contracting.
It was his fault that Ranboo would be a prisoner...
The moment was only interrupted by a loud whoosh of air.
Tubbo turned quickly, flinching away from the sound only to see a giant black and white tail land in front of him. The people around Ranboo's fingers jumped out of the way as the giant yawned.
“Tubbo...you’re okay,” the giant’s booming voice whispered.
Tubbo tilted his head back as far as he could and saw a large red eye peer back at him. Ranboo looked tired and his head barely lifted off the ground, but he was awake.
Tubbo didn't realize how much he missed his friend's face.
“I’m alright big man,” Tubbo hushed, softly pushing his hand into the tail’s fur.
“Enough, we have things to discuss,” Phil said sternly as he pulled Tubbo away from the giant’s tail, his friendly demeanor forgotten.
Ranboo grunted and reached forward to Tubbo, but Techno’s sword stopped him. His older brother stood scarily still in front of the giant’s face. The tip of his sword rested against the giant’s neck, ready to strike.
Tubbo hated seeing how fear glazed over Ranboo’s expression. The gentle giant was usually so confident but surrounded by the guard he looked helpless.
“You will not move until after we’re done speaking; do you understand?” Phil called out.
When he got a shaky nod from Ranboo he walked closer, “We have a proposition for you. One I believe you may like.”
Everyone around the giant went silent as they waited for Phil to speak. Even Techno looked nervous...
“We can’t let you roam free when we have a town to protect,” Phil started, keeping his eyes on the giant, “But...we can let you go if you agree to help us.”
Ranboo blinked owlishly at the human, “What do you mean?”
Carefully, Phil reached forward and revealed a small emblem in his hand. The glimmering gold and blue medallion was familiar to Tubbo- a guard badge. The object he'd spent years of his life trying to obtain.
Phil placed the metal pin on the ground just a few feet away from Ranboo’s hand before backing away again. Cautiously, the giant picked it up with his claws and lifted it to his eyes.
“You- you really want me to join?”
Phil nodded and shoved his hands into the sides of his coat. Tubbo could tell by the way he seemed to hide under his hat that he was nervous, even though his face still radiated confidence.
“Yes. You protected my kids...better than I could...” he explained carefully, “I think we all know now that we’re underprepared in the case of well- a giant. Someone like you would be a great help to us a-”
“Yes.”
Phil flinched back at the sudden interruption of Ranboo’s voice, his hand moving towards his sword out of habit. However, as soon as he saw the wide grin that spread across the giant’s face he relaxed.
Tubbo’s heart warmed at the familiar smile. The whole situation felt like a dream in his mind, this is something he’d wished for, not reality. It couldn’t possibly be real.
“Of course. I’d love to,” Ranboo smiled. The tip of his tail pushed against Tubbo happily.
“Oh- well good. That’s good,” Phil laughed.
Ranboo fumbled a bit with the small badge in his fingers before Tubbo walked forward to help. The gold badge dropped into his open hands, and carefully he pinned it onto the side of Ranboo’s cloak.
As soon as he made contact with the fabric he felt Ranboo purr happily.
“Keep the badge on,” Techno said sternly, interrupting the giant's pleased purrs, “It shows the guard you’re not a threat. You have permission to come close to the town, but you can’t let the villagers see you. We have to know we can trust you first.”
Ranboo nodded and let out a soft chirp in acknowledgment. The sound seemed to shock his father as much as Techno. Although, both shook the surprise off their face pretty quickly.
“Thank you uh...Mr. Tubbo,” Ranboo cringed.
Tubbo laughed from his spot up against the giant’s chest as Phil sputtered in confusion. “Phil...Phil is fine, and this is Techno by the way.”
Before Ranboo could respond Michael ran past with open arms and slammed into the giant's side. Happy squeals burst out of his chest.
A few seconds later, Wilbur came jogging after the toddler.
“Sorry, couldn’t hold him back any longer,” he chuckled.
Tubbo finally got a solid glimpse of his older brother and noticed that he too was pretty scratched up. Bandages covered his entire chest and a long cut ran down his arm.
“It’s alright,” Ranboo whispered as he gently placed the tiny piglin next to Tubbo.
The boy immediately nuzzled his way back into Tubbo’s chest. The warmth felt nice against the cold wind of the forest.
“Hey, I’m supposed to be the favorite now come on,” Wilbur yelled at the piglin who just squeaked in response.
“See he’s an unappreciative bastard,” Tommy laughed, “Told you so.”
As Tubbo relaxed into Ranboo’s chest it was like all the exhaustion from the last few days washed over his mind. The up and down rocking of his breaths was slowly winning him over, and as his family talked he could barely keep his eyes open.
“You tired?” Ranboo chuckled as Tubbo yawned loudly.
Tubbo shook his head, but the sleepy glaze over his eyes betrayed him. With a soft laugh, Ranboo gently rolled him back onto the ground to be with his family.
“Go sleep, I’ll still be here in the morning. Gotta get patched up before I can go anywhere,” Ranboo smiled.
Tubbo frowned and tried to march back to the giant before his dad’s hand rested firmly on his shoulder.
“He’s right Tubbo. He’ll still be here later. Let’s get you back to sleep okay?”
Too tired to argue Tubbo leaned into his dad’s arms and let himself be carried back. The sound of Tommy and Wilbur arguing with Techno over something stupid was the last thing he heard before sleep took over.

“What the fuck is wrong with you!”
Schlatt groaned as the small human in front of him threw his arms up in disgust. Meanwhile, Charlie sat on the other side of the cave disgustingly domestic as always. The little shit was always too fond of the human anyway.
It got on Schlatt’s nerves.
“I can’t fucking believe you, I leave you alone for what- a week? And you kidnap a ton of people?”
Alex glared at him with a furious look on his face, and Schlatt knew he really shouldn’t push his luck anymore...but sometimes the human made him want to scream.
“Fuck you,” he spat.
Charlie looked down as Quackity marched forward to Schlatt.
Poison dripped from the human's words, “If you try anything like this again it’s your last fucking chance. You hear me? I’ve already given you too many shots at this.”
Before he even had a chance to answer, Schlatt felt a small painful buzz against his collarbone making him flinch.
“You listen to me,” Alex growled, “I’m in charge here.”
Another shock lit up against his spine and this time Schlatt fell forward onto his face. His already sore chest felt like it was on fire. “Yes...Yes, Alex.”
“Good.”
When he heard the small footsteps leave the cave again he finally pushed himself up.
He fucking hated this kid.
Picture this if you will, G!Technoblade wakes from his hibernation and his instincts immediately tell him to locate his family.
He's on bad terms with the younger two, one of which would most likely have a panic attack if he showed up.
But his instincts insisted, so he started with the worse, Tubbo.
Tubbo did have a panic attack just as predicted, but Technoblade's soft (to him) grunts and snorts let the younger know it was instinctual. Then he finds out about Michael, NEW PACKMATE!
Next was Tommy, who actually tried to stab him but didn't fight much against Techno's instincts. Helping keep Tubbo calm and spending time with Michael.
Ranboo was a surprise, and it took a few tries to catch him but he was brought to his check just like the other three.
He didn't even have to find Ghostbur, even dead he knew his twin's instincts better than anyone.
Lastly Phil, who Tommy and Tubbo attempted to stay far from, as the adult ignored the other two.
The voices mourned what used to be and decided that they (Technoblade) will fix this.
Right now, Technoblade is keeping his tiny family close to his chest, ignoring how tense the younger two were and the jabs from Phil.
Everything will be better soon...with patience.

It's a harsh world
It's a harsh, harsh world, and Philza Minecraft will do anything to survive.
In this harsh world for him— A Tiny—and he'll use whatever resources he can. Because he has to survive.
...
Philza Minecraft is a tiny that has lived for a long time. Far longer than the normal amount, actually. It's not because of tinies has longer lifespans than humans, No. Actually, there are recent research proving that a tiny has a bit shorter lifespan than a human. But Philza has lived far longer than a tiny and a human's lifespan.
And he owes it to his lover.
"Lady Death" people call her. Whispers bouncing along the cities of travelers— humans and tinies alike— he heard.
"Lady Death has fallen in love with a mortal" the folktale whispered to children said. "The mortal took the love, and swore to her that he will give her everything" It continues on "Lady Death rejected it, Death doesn't desire worldly things. Death has seen things come and go. But there is something that Death desires." The folktale echoed, and Philza knows the continuation "The mortal then was gifted two things, with one of them being 500 years for life. And then Lady Death asked the mortal—"
"Phil?" a voice echoed. Snapping Philza's reminiscense. Phil looked up, and was met with a concerned face "You okay?"
"Yeah, Techno. I'm fine" Phil replied.
Technoblade. A travelling warrior who helped him when he was hunted. It was a frightening situation and though Phil was sure he could escape by himself— especially since he has that thing— he still appreciates the help.
After that incident, Techno and Phil travelled together. They'll travel together for the span of maybe three months. They were heading the same way— with Techno getting a yearly invitation to the neighbouring kingdom colloseum and Phil is Phil, travelling wherever his feet brought him, and it just so happens that he was heading towards the neighbouring kingdom.
They got along great. there was this another time where Phil was almost got taken away by a bear, and Techno saved him— again, a frightening situation where Phil is sure he can get out of it by himself (he carries a sword around for a reason) but were nonetheless grateful at Techno for saving him.
As for Techno, when Phil asked why Techno still bother travelling with him, Techno gave him a simple "Why not?" and continue on eating the freshly-cooked bear meat. Phil laughed it off with a "That mindset will cause you trouble one day, mate"
Of course, Phil isn't being a total hindrance or anything, Phil has a vast knowledge of things in general. There are times when he knew that a certain source of water is poisonous or times when he knew exactly what to do when they saw a traveler got bitten by a poisonous snake(Techno got bit once, actually)
They got along great. Techno doesn't seem to mind or care that Phil is a tiny. He cares for Phil. Several nights were spent with them telling stories to each other— which Phil had plenty— and several mornings were spent with them laughing and relaxing around small animals.
But again. It's a harsh world.
Techno and Phil lives in a harsh world where it's very possible for strangers to try and kill them
And said situation is happening now.
It's getting dark. The sun is gleefully moving down its path, waiting for and cares for no one.
It's getting dark, and two travellers— with one of them being a tiny— meet another pair of travellers.
"It's getting dark. Why don't we rest here for the night?" Offered one of the opposing pair of travelers to Techno and Phil. They agreed, It'll be safer to stay in groups, afterall.
Techno and Phil didn't know, that the decision will cost them greatly.
It was so sudden, the moment the two "travellers" noticed their guards are down, they attacked. One of them locking Techno's movement and the other trapping Phil in a wooden cage while helping the other one locking Techno down.
The situation got ugly very, very quickly
Phil isn't listening to the two "travellers" anymore. His mind is digging up memories. Memories from 232 years ago. Memories from when he first died.
Philza Minecraft died in the hands of hunters. In a cage.
No. Fuck no. Phil thought. I can't die here. I can't— I shouldn't— I still have to—
Philza looked around. It's dark. Dark and wet. It had just hit Phil's mind that it had rained. Before him, Techno is struggling from the hold. The two people who tried to take them are distracted from trying to keep Techno in his place, including the one that's in charge of Phil's cage.
The people had taken Phil's sword, but they hadn't taken anything else from him. The thought left Phil grinning. A foolish decision, really. He's tiny, sure, but that doesn't mean he doesn't carry a hidden blade around.
The wooden cage is normally a hassle to cut, but it's nothing compared to when he was locked in a steel cage centuries ago. The wooden cage was a breeze compared to that.
Thus, Philza Minecraft broke free
Philza Minecraft broke free, and spreaded out his wings.
Philza Minecraft broke free, spreaded out his wings, and looked at each of the human's face. Including Techno's face.
A shine of awe sparked in his eyes, his mouth is left half-open in shock. But most of all, he had the expression of a pleading man. Wanting to be helped.
—but before that, let me tell you a story.
A folktale passed around the world for generations. A story about Lady Death.
A story you have yet to finish reading.
Lady Death gifted a mortal whom she loved two gifts, with one of them being 500 years for life, and one of them was wings.
Lady Death then asked the mortal "Can you live my 'life' for me?" the mortal who was madly in love with Death agreed, and Death gave the mortal a part of her soul, hoping to experience the 'life' she has never experienced.
—that mortal was Philza Minecraft.
That's why Philza shouldn't die.
That's why Philza will do anything to survive.
That's why Philza only spared his two and a half month-long friend a glance, and flew away. Philza had a chance to help him. But he will not take it. Not if it risked the life he had to share with Death.
Afterall, what's two and a half month to a centuries old being?
...
Behind Philza, Techno was left alone. Alone with the two people who were trying to take him.
Alone with the memory of Philza, asking him why Techno had still bothered taking him along. "Why not" Techno had answered. And with the back figure of a flying Philza, Techno had realized what did Philza meant when he said "That mindset will cause you trouble one day"

——————————
The guard headquarters was never intended to contain this much chaos. People ran around frantically preparing weapons, armor, and potions of all colors.
The sound of boots against wood and hushed words bounced against the walls.
Meanwhile, Phil just watched. His body felt numb and useless while Ponk sat beside him, spooning a clear liquid into Sam’s mouth.
Ponk had offered a drug to Phil earlier, saying it might help him stay calm. But Phil declined. His son, his missing son, deserved a clear mind. He couldn’t help find him if he couldn’t even think straight.
All they needed was to make sure Sam was okay; he could watch over the village while they were gone. Phil just hoped to any god there was Will could hold on for just a couple more minutes.
“How much longer?” Phil hummed impatiently while Ponk checked Sam’s pulse again. The antidote for the tranquilizer potion dribbled out of the unconscious man’s mouth.
“Not much longer, should be up any moment.”
“Good, good.”
Ponk gave Phil a sad smile and patted his leg. “We’ll find him okay?”
Ponk waved over Phil’s head, and when he turned he was met by Techno who slowly closed the door to the infirmary. He looked out of place in his heavy armor.
“He can’t have gone far,” Ponk hummed.
Phil let his head fall to his chest, “But what if-“
“The blood was probably just the piglin, maybe the giant didn’t even see Will,” Techno interrupted.
“That’s wishful thinking...” Phil muttered.
Techno sighed and sat down on the small metal stool next to Sam’s cot; his arm found its way around his dad’s shoulders, “It’s the only way we can think right now.”
“He’s up!”
Immediately Phil’s head snapped to attention. Sam grumbled and rolled over on the cot before letting out a harsh cough.
“What...holy shit,” Sam mumbled into the pillow.
Ponk chuckled and patted the man’s back, “Nice to see you alive again Sam.”
“Oh...Ponk...I feel awful.”
“Yep, pretty expected after being tranquilized,” Techno huffed.
“I was what I-” Sam scrunched up his face, “Wheres Wilbur?”
The moment the words left his mouth it was like all the air had been sucked out of the room. Even stoic Techno, shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
“Missing, he’s missing,” Ponk muttered.
Sam’s body immediately shot up in a panic, the cloth mask he usually wore around his face falling off in his hurry.
“What? What happened, we need to find him. What are we-”
Sam was interrupted by Ponk pushing him back down on the cot. The medic stroked back Sam’s hair with a sad smile.
“The guards readied a search party, we were just waiting for you to wake up,” Ponk whispered.
Sam frowned and opened his mouth to speak before Ponk continued, “It’s not your fault, don’t even think it. We needed at least one guard member to stay here, and you’re gonna need time to feel better anyway.”
“But he could be in -”
“We know Sam. We can handle it...just stay here,” Techno huffed, “You’ll be more useful here anyway, if that makes you feel any better.”
Sam nodded slowly, the tattoos covering his face that were usually hidden under his mask on full display. Phil vaguely remembered Sam saying he covered them out of respect for his old village that had been completely wiped out. He didn’t feel it was appropriate to show off their culture when his people no longer could.
“Will you be okay here alone?” Phil asked.
A slow nod was all he received before Phil was out of the room. Just barely he could hear Techno’s footsteps behind him. They had no time to waste.
When he reentered the main part of the headquarters the bustling died down like a switch had been flicked. All eyes were on Phil.
He took a deep breath and looked at every person lined up in front of him. Young and old, every member was ready, even the volunteers who didn’t normally accompany the guard.
“Hello, everyone...” Phil coughed, “I know we’ve had times of peace recently, but unfortunately, it seems it has come to an end. As many of you know one of our own is missing...”
The name of his son died on his lips.
“We need to be quick, I fear we’ve already wasted too much time. Stay close and stay alert...and thank you, thank you all.”
Techno patted Phil’s shoulder and offered his backpack of supplies. The familiar leather straps grounded Phil in the present.
One by one the guard left the building until only Sam and Ponk were left. He hoped they would be fine on their own. Quickly, he lead the group of almost thirty to the wall’s exit. It had been so long since Phil had had the entire guard together like this...and he wished it could be in a better circumstance.
“You know the drill, stay low everyone,” Phil called out before pulling on the gates hatch. The stone door usually keeping the town safe fell with a loud whine, and as soon as it was out of the way the guard was on the move.
Luckily, whatever creature had attacked the piglin had left footprints behind. All they had to do was follow and they’d find their target.
Phil wasn’t sure if he’d prefer to find Wilbur there or not.
The idea that his son was with a giant at all was horrifying.
But if he wasn’t there it would either mean he was somewhere else...or that the giant had already...
Phil shut that thought down before it could finish. He couldn’t think like that.
He forced himself to continue forward even though every step added to the dread building in his heart. The only thing keeping him steady was his eldest son’s hand on his shoulder.
Techno was silent during their march. The only words used to point out where the tracks were whenever they lost sight. Every time the footprints disappeared or seemed too far, Phil felt his strength drip away. He couldn’t lose Wilbur too, he couldn’t handle it.
He’d already lost Kristen, and they’d wasted so much time already. He had no clue how long Wilbur had been missing before they found the blood on the wall...
The trees around them were so tall Phil could barely see the sky above. The only sounds came from the guard’s boots and the hooting of gigantic birds. Phil didn’t think he’d ever gone that far into the woods but the giant’s tracks continued, and so the guard followed. Behind his back, the muttering of friends bounced against trees.
“You doing alright, dad?”
Techno’s words startled Phil out of his focus. And the word thrown on to the end wasn’t lost on him. A world Techno rarely used, Phil knew it was his way of comforting him.
“I’ll be better when we find Will,” he sighed, pushing a stray tree branch out of his way.
Techno softly grabbed Phil’s wrist, “Will’s smart he’ll be okay...”
“That’s what everyone keeps saying.”
“It’s true,” Techno promised, “It's true dad.”
Phil felt hot tears prick against his eyelids and tilted his head down. He couldn’t cry until they’d found him.
“He’s right you know,” another hand fell on Phil’s other shoulder.
When he turned he was met by the familiar kind grin of Scott. His usually well-kept hair a wild mess. He must have left in a rush to be with the guard.
“Thanks, mate...”
Scott looked like he had more to say, but Phil watched the exact moment everything went wrong. Scott’s face twisted up before he slammed his hand against Phil’s chest.
Phil stumbled back with a yelp, “What the hell-”
“Shhh...did you hear that?” Scott whispered.
Phil thought Scott was just being dramatic until he noticed the rest of the guard was in a similar state of unease.
“I heard it...” Techno whispered, the hand on Phil’s wrist tightening almost painfully.
The guard fell into silence for what felt like an hour until a loud creak echoed above them. Phil gasped and tried to push Scott and Techno out of the way before a giant tree branch crashed to the ground, just barely missing Phil’s leg.
“Fuck... just a tree,” Scott laughed before a loud cry echoed out from nearby.
Wilbur... Phil would recognize his son's voice anywhere. As much as it pained him to hear his son’s screams, it meant he was still alive. He was close.
The moment of relief was short-lived though before another branch crashed down in front of the group.
Phil backed away as the sound of gently waving leaves turned into a tornado of noise while more and more branches fell to the ground.
“What the hell! Stay close!” Phil yelled out to the clumped-up guard members, each one with varying degrees of fear on their faces. “Stay-”
A crazed laugh burst out from above them.
“Yeah stay close. It's easier that way.”
The only warning they had was the voice before a giant shadow fell over the group. When Phil looked up giant curled horns and jagged teeth stared back.
A longhorn giant.
Phil felt his mouth run dry.
How was it here? They lived in the mountains as far as he knew...and they weren’t known for hunting people.
Phil backed away, subconsciously pushing Techno behind him as he glared up at the giant sitting in the tree above them.
“What? Why the scared face?” The giant cackled again before leaping down to the ground next to them.
Its feet, or hooves Phil guessed, were half the size of his entire body...as if its harsh grin and claws weren't terrifying enough.
Phil quickly glanced over his shoulder and fearfully realized they couldn’t get away. Gigantic branches circled the group...and even if they could run, the moment they tried the longhorn would crash into them with those horns... They'd be skewered.
They had no escape.
Techno was the first one to rush into action. The younger man pushed Phil aside and dashed at the giant with his axe held high, but the creature didn’t even budge.
“I wouldn’t do that If I were you.”
Techno didn’t hesitate though as he swung down the blade only for it to explode in his hands. The worn metal turned to bubbling flecks of silver in just moments.
“Eh?” Techno yelped, backing away from the giant. The only thing remaining of his sword was the handle which was slowly fizzling away as if it was being eaten by acid.
“You didn’t really think I set this whole thing up alone right? Idiots...” the giant smirked.
All of a sudden another figure became visible in the trees above them. Wild brown hair covered most of its face and tattered cloth covered its chest. However, the most terrifying part of its appearance was the gelatinous sludge surrounding its arms and legs.
“Don’t you think he’ll be mad? I don’t think we’re supposed to get humans,” the new giant muttered nervously.
“Oh shut up Charlie, he can suck my dick if he cares so much,” the longhorn spat, “ ‘Only eat things in the woods’ my ass. We lured em here, they're fair game.”
“But they’re like...not cows,” the smaller giant hummed, “I don’t know.”
“Oh, will you fucking shut up for once in your god damn life!” The longhorn growled, “I’m done sucking Alex’s cock for god's sake, I’m fucking hungry and I’m gonna eat. And if I can’t eat him, then these will have to do.”
The jelly giant’s frown was barely visible underneath his ocean of shaggy hair. Carefully it made its way down the tree; its hands leaving scorch marks in the bark.
“He’s gonna be upset Schlatt,” Charlie murmured to the taller giant.
The longhorn, or Schlatt, growled and shoved his fist into Charlie’s shoulder earning a loud yelp from the jelly giant. Phil thought the smaller giant would burn the other, but it just cowered away.
“Sorry.”
Phil felt like his heart was twisting as he watched the two giants argue above him. The sound of his son’s crying from somewhere in the trees never left his ears.
“Phil it’s gonna be okay...” Techno whispered slowly, but when Phil met his eyes he only found fear.
“I love you,” Phil whispered, “I love you so so much.”
“Oh how touching.” The men jumped away at the booming voice.
It was enough to send one guard member, Shelby, running. She didn’t get far though before a large clump of slime was thrown in front of her making the grass sizzle.
“Oh I wouldn’t try to run, it’ll make this worse for all of you,” the longhorn laughed before reaching forward into the group.
When his hand came back up Scott struggled desperately in his grip.
“Now if you don’t wanna be dissolved you’re gonna come with me,” the giant growled, “Oh, and before you get any ideas, the boy is already with us. If you wanna say any final words, I’d recommend you listen.”
When Phil looked back at the guard they looked terrified. Every single member stood still watching the pair of giants above them. Phil realized they were waiting to see what he would do...what their leader would do.
As much as it hurt, Phil took the step forward. The longhorn grinned, its sharp teeth poking out from its lips.
Phil shuddered at the gasps of surprise from behind him, he knew he was betraying the guard's trust by complying with the monsters...
But at least he’d see Wilbur again, one last time.

Sam was more than a little…peeved…about the situation he’d been put in.
For a while he could avoid the giant, his body still needed recovery from Wilbur tranquilizing him. It hurt like hell, but at least the injury gave him some excuse.
But now, no matter how much he wished he could just curl back up in the darkness of his house, Ponk said he was good to go back to work.
Ponk had been so happy once he could stay awake for more than a couple hours at a time, and while Sam was excited to spend time with his favorite doctor again, he wasn’t excited to go back to the guard.
Because going back to the guard meant no no more avoiding their new pet giant…as much as he wanted to.
“Sam are you ready?” Phil’s voice echoed through the guard’s head quarters.
A heavy breath fell out of Sam’s mouth as he finished up lacing his boots. They were worn and dirty from years of work, but they still held together.
(And no matter how much Ponk complained that they made their house stink like lionwolf shit, he was a man of routine.)
“Yeah I’m ready,” Sam yelled back. His voice bounced against the worn wood of the building.
With nervous steps he walked over to Phil hoping that he’d suddenly turn around and say they didn’t have to go. Maybe Sam could just stay behind. Maybe Phil would decide he didn’t need to come, or they could just postpone the trip.
But there was no luck.
Phil grabbed Sam’s shoulder happily pulling him out through the door.
“I’m really glad your back Sam, we were worried about you honestly,” Phil said.
All around them the soft hum of crickets enveloped them like a blanket, and the warm glow of the town illuminated the grass. Even through his thick mask he could feel the gentle wind from the forest.
Sam tried to just focus on the peaceful scene rather than his heavily beating heart.
“Yeah me too,” Sam swallowed, “Good to be back yeah?”
“Mhm,” Phil hummed.
Sam followed just a couple feet behind as Phil pushed up a tall wooden ladder against the town’s walls. It was rickety from years and years of use, but no one had ever tried to make a new one.
However, before they could climb the ladder Phil paused and turned back towards the town, a contemplative look on his face.
“What’s wrong?”
Phil shook his head and grinned back at Sam.
“Just waiting for someone.”
Sam shrugged his leather bag over his shoulder and leaned back next to Phil. The older man seemed so calm in comparison to Sam who could barely stop himself from shaking. His anxiety kept screaming at him to run away.
You have no reason to be afraid, his mind reminded him, but he shook those thoughts away quickly.
It was only a couple minutes later when heavy footsteps approached from the town. The wet grass underneath them squelched loudly, a heavy contrast to the peace of the night.
“Who…” Sam trailed off right before a familiar figure came into the light.
Of course it was him.
Running up to the two men and completely out of breath was Ponk. His red mask was wet with sweat and Sam would think he’d just ran a marathon if he didn’t know that Ponk lived only a couple roads down in the same house as him.
Sam barely had time to process before Ponk had practically thrown himself onto him. His arms wrapped around him like a jacket- tight and warm. Even though he felt terrified, hed never turn down a hug from his favorite person in the whole town.
“What? Ponk-”
“Surprise,” Phil grinned, snapping Sam’s thoughts away from Ponk, “Hes coming with us tonight. While we’re out he’s gonna check on Ranboo’s health.”
“It’s…health?” Sam frowned. His eyes darted to Ponk in confusion but the doctor didn’t seem at all upset with the situation.
Although the idea of seeing Ponk next to a giant made Sam nauseous.
“Yep,” Ponk grinned, “Gotta do a check up. He was tranquilized just like you, yaknow?”
Sam’s eyebrows knit together in confusion, “No- Didn’t know that.”
“You’ve missed a lot then,” Phil interrupted with a sharp laugh.
Sam watched as Phil took the first couple steps up the ladder. It swayed a bit under his weight, but he was able to get to the top fine before waving for the others to follow.
Ponk climbed up first excitedly, his feet caught on some of the loose nails a couple times but he got up safely. As soon as Sam was sure the doctor wasn’t going to fall on his ass he quickly climbed after them. His heart thudded heavy against his rib cage when his feet finally met the grass on the other side of the wall.
“You good Sam?” Phil turned back, “It’s not a far walk, but if you still feel bad just tell me and you can stay behind.”
Sam snapped back to reality and shook his head at the other man.
“No no sorry. I’m just a bit tired,” he said with a tight smile.
As much as Sam wanted to take the offer, he hated the idea of leaving Ponk with a giant. Even if Phil was there.
The rest of their walk felt almost too fast. And it didn’t help that he kept drifting in and out of his head.
The only thing grounding him was the soft feeling of Ponk’s arm brushing against his own every so often. Surprisingly, he seemed happy, exited even, to be in the forest- a stark contrast to Sam’s own feelings.
His swirling mind only froze when the cave’s entrance finally came into view. His heels dug into the long grass, but Phil and Ponk continued on.
They seemed so relaxed even though he felt like his heart was struggling to beat. He was pretty sure that if he took even another step closer to the giant’s den he would have a heart attack and die on the spot.
What a way to go Sam, his mind applauded.
It was only when Ponk looked back at him with giddy excitement clear on his face that Sam felt himself melt. He’d put his fears aside for him.
Just this once.
“See it’s not bad,” Phil said as he lit a small torch in front of the group. All around them the damp smell of stone and dirt felt almost suffocating. Sam felt itchy breathing it in; he had no idea how Phil and Techno did this so often.
Ponk’s hand brushed against Sam’s momentarily, and when he turned to look at the doctor a lazy smile spread across his face.
“Isn’t this fun Sammy?”
Sam huffed out a small laugh and squeezed his fingers around Ponk’s, “Fun is a strong word for this.”
“Stop being so pouty,” Ponk scowled before he broke off into laughter. From in front of the two Sam heard a small chuckle out of Phil.
It was almost nice, at least until small drawings started to appear on the walls. The colorful drawings made him feel unsettled although he couldn’t exactly place why. They looked like a kid’s art- all scratchy and messed up, it felt too much like he was in one of the horror stories the town’s children told each other.
And the feeling of a ceiling pressing down on them from above made every cell in his body shiver. He’d never been a fan of confined spaces even if the ceiling was still fairly high.
“Almost there Sam come on,” Ponk smiled as he tugged him forward through the winding passages.
When Phil finally stopped Sam had to catch himself before he slammed right into him.
“We’re here,” Phil turned back with a soft smile, “I’m gonna go check out the lionwolf situation outside, you just stay with Ponk for the check up okay.”
Sam flinched in surprise, “Wait you’re leaving?! I thought you were-”
“I’ve got no reason to be here mate,” Phil interrupted with a smile and the wave of his hand, “Just need someone to watch Ponk.”
“But what if the giant does something! I can’t do anything, I can’t-”
“He’s sweet,” Ponk’s hand rested on his shoulder reassuringly, “I’ll be fine.”
Sam frowned back at his roommate, his closest friend, his everything and let his head fall forward.
“Is that a yes?” Phil asked.
Sam nodded and leaned back into Ponk’s touch. ‘He could do this’ he repeated in his mind like a mantra. It would be okay. Everything was okay.
“Yes Phil.”
Phil clapped his hands together sending specks of dust flying into the already thick air, “Good, I’ll be off then. I’ll be back in an hour to pick you up mate.”
Sam nodded again but it felt like his head was filled with mud. He couldn’t finish a single thought before another one raced through his head.
He barely even noticed Phil had left them alone in the tunnel until Ponk’s fingers squeezed his shoulder reassuringly.
“You ready?”
The familiar smile that crossed Ponk’s face made Sam’s stomach churn with anxiety. He seemed so happy, but he knew that meeting the giant couldn’t possibly end well.
And Ponk was possibly the worst person to be there for the encounter.
He was the last person Sam wanted to find out.
Sam took a deep breath, feeling his lungs press against his ribs and nodded back at Ponk, “Ready as I can be.”
The doctor beamed at him again and this time gently pulled him forward. He walked with his shoulder against Sam’s the entire time as they finally entered the most massive cave Sam had even seen. The ceiling was easily five hundred feet tall and the room was almost the size of their town.
That wasn’t even containing the several pathways leading off from the room.
It was dimly lit with a giant bundle of leaves and wool to the left. And in the middle, resting as if it wasn’t about to ruin Sam’s life, was the giant. It’s ears flicked upwards at their footsteps and before he knew it one giant eye was peeking open at them.
“Ranboo!” Ponk chirped, yanking Sam forward towards the giant.
“Check up time?” Ranboo yawned, “Already?”
“Yep,” Ponk grinned as he dug through his medical bag, “Gotta do a little blood test to see how much of the tranquilizer is still in your system. And I brought you more of the antidote.”
Ponk walked forward with a small vial of clear liquid in his hands. Sam recognized it as the same medicine he’d been given when Wilbur tranquilized him just a couple weeks earlier.
“Thank you Ponk but uh….” the giant’s face scrunched up, “Who’s your…friend.”
The question as innocent as it sounded made Sam want to shrivel up. And the look of disgust only grew on the giants features.
It knew, it knew, Sam’s mind screamed.
Sam looked up at Ranboo with disdain, and as soon as their eyes met the giant flinched away like he’d been hit. Even Ponk seemed to notice the new tension in the room.
“Oh this is Sam! We live together, and he’s part of the guard,” Ponk smiled trying to lessen the tension a bit, “Hes been sick though, it’s why you haven’t met him yet.”
“Uhuh,” Ranboo frowned, right before Sam noticed that his tail was coiling tightly around a small figure.
A tiny little piglin was snuggled into the mounds of fur, and when Sam turned to get a better look the giant let out a low growl.
“Woah,” Ponk backed up, “Are you alright?”
Ranboo seemed just as surprised by his actions as Sam. His eyes bunched together and his tail coiled tighter around the young piglin.
“Yes. Yeah, sorry,” Ranboo muttered back, “Maybe I just…Uh maybe I need a moment, sorry.”
Ponk nodded and packed some of his equipment back into his bag.
“Alright,” he announced, “I’ll give you a moment, gotta go wash up my stuff before I take any blood anyway.”
Sam rushed forward to try to go with the other man before he was pushed back. “No Sam, you stay here okay?”
“What but why-” Sam grimaced. Behind the two he could still here the small brushes of fur against stone whenever the giant shifted.
“Watch over him please,” Ponk whispered, “I’ve never heard him growl before.”
Sam frowned and tugged again at Ponk’s hand desperately hoping he’d let him join, but the doctor just shook him off. The last thing he got was a thumbs up from his friend before he left down one of the many tunnels.
And just like that he was alone.
“What…” the giant grumbled behind him, the vibrations from his voice went straight through Sam’s body, “What are you…”
Slowly, the guardsmen turned to the giant and tried to control his shaking hands. Ponk was still there, he couldn’t lose his composure just yet.
“Human of course,” Sam said sternly, “Why do you ask?”
Ranboo frowned and pulled his tail closer to his chest. Gently the piglin child was dropped into one of his hands before being completely covered by the giant’s fingers.
“You smell like death.”
Sam felt a shiver jolt through his spine at the giant’s words, “I’m still sick, probably just that.”
“No,” Ranboo frowned, “Tubbo’s been sick before…”
“And?” Sam muttered.
He tried to stay calm but he could feel his pulse pounding in his skull, beating as if it was trying to break out of his body.
“He never smelt like this….” Ranboo growled.
At the sight of the giant’s teeth Sam glared and marched forward. He couldn’t let Ranboo find out, and if he knew…he couldn’t let him tell Ponk.
Sam barely got a few feet closer before the giant’s tail lashed out, “Stop. You’re not hum-”
“Shut the fuck up!”
Fearfully Ranboo’s ears pressed back against his head, but before he could do anything Sam ripped off his dark mask. This time when his eyes met Ranboo’s the massive tattoos covering his face swirled angrily.
“You’re a giant…” Ranboo trailed off, pulling the child close to his chest.
Sam nodded once before pulling his mask back over his ears. Even though the tattoos were out of sight he could still feel them itching against his skin.
“If you say anything. Even one word when Ponk comes back… I’ll ruin you.”
Ranboo nodded again, his mouth hung open in surprise or fear- Sam wasn’t sure.
It was like all their words had been sucked into the air, neither spoke, neither wanted to break the silence first.
The piglin’s squeals was the first thing to slice through the tension.
“You have a kid?” Sam asked, nervously shifting in his feet.
“Uh yes kind of,” Ranboo muttered, “Adopted though.”
“Well I guessed that part,” Sam laughed quietly.
Ranboo shifted a bit closer to the guardsmen and tilted his head down. The shadow that fell over Sam put him on edge.
“Can I ask you something?” Ranboo whispered. His ears twitched nervously.
“I might not answer.”
The giant hummed again and tapped his fingers on the ground as if he was thinking, “Why are you human? I thought that was a myth.”
“Just didn’t want to be big anymore,” Sam nodded stiffly, “Tired of being a monster. Life this way is much better.”
Ranboo opened his mouth to ask something else before being interrupted by loud footsteps. Both men snapped their heads to see Ponk running up to them with his sleeves both wet.
“Ready for the check up?” he smiled.
Ranboo’s eyes momentarily drifted to Sam’s before flicking back to the human. As soon as he nodded Ponk’s practiced hands dove into his medical bag for equipment.
While the doctor worked Sam sat in silence leaned against the cave wall. Every time the other giant spoke he hung on to his words like a lifeline, just waiting for Ranboo to reveal his secret. The giant metaphorically held his entire life in his hands, but he didn’t even seem bothered. Not once did he bring up Sam or what he was- Ponk still had no clue.
When Phil finally came back to take them home Sam felt like a heavy weight had been lifted off his chest.
One person knew his secret, and while the idea of it scared Sam to no end…he guessed it would be okay if Ranboo kept his promise.
